Automatic Banning System Being Tested On the PBE

January 30th, 2013 Leave a comment

PBE

Today Riot Lyte announced a new system for detecting and punishing Toxic Behaviour and it’s hitting the PBE today.

As an example, we have implemented a system on PBE that will automatically detect toxic behaviors and ban the players the same day—this system will go live today and will immediately punish 167 players with a 7 day ban. Depending on the consistency and severity of the toxic behaviors, this system will hand out bans that range in severity from a 7 day ban to a permanent ban from the PBE environment. This system will start off conservative and may have hiccups at first, but we hope to ramp up the aggressiveness of this system while maintaining a goal of 99% accuracy with a false positive rate of less than 1%.

An automatic system: capable of being judge, jury and executioner with 99% accuracy is the goal. Riot’s focus on removing the truly toxic players has always been very human, with the players (tribunal) or Riot themselves doling out the punishment. This will remove the human factor completely from day-to-day bans. It will be more efficient, but will it be better? Only time will tell. While it’s only coming to the PBE for now, and something as complex as this will almost certainly have a long testing phase, Lyte had one last thing to say:

Yes, all effective experiments will be promoted onto live environments.

Beep Boop, Ban the Baddies.

    wow this is interesting.
    me and my friends always respect other peoples, we never trashtalk to unknown peoples, but when i do queue with them it happens to trashtalk to eachother for fun, we know this and we don’t care because we are friends, and sometimes, old date friends (it does not affect the other peoples with us and against us ofcourse … we like call eachother noob, report bad mannersshhh!!! or shit like that) so i think the system would recognize this as bad behaviour while it isn’t at all because we are just joking and laughing all together… even the peoples not queueing with us but on our team(like if we do 4man queue) do laugh because he\they understand we do this for fun.
    well, i dunno, we will see how it works… maybe we will just stay on skype :D

    It seems that some of the main points should be explained. Everyone plays the game for fun, but issues arise because people have different definitions of what fun actually entails. Some people have fun just playing, for the game itself. Others like Cody play but have fun trash talking with friends and some more extreme guys like Aj feel that they should just do whatever they want cus its only a game and fun can be whatever they feel like.

    There are some rather simple but hard to accept realities that come with this however. Firstly, guys like Cody, who I’m sure are just joking around, often make the mistake of assuming that everyone else knows they re joking too. This assumption is equal in both its frequency and plain false nature. Lets be honest, you don’t know who your playing with and they don’t know you, so how could you automatically assume everyone knows your just playing around. Its just silly to think otherwise. Amazingly, there’s such an easy fix that no one does which is very simply to tell them clearly that you’re joking or just messing around yet no one does it. This does not speak to your teammates maturity but your own on a very basic level.

    It should be noted that there are others who simply rage uncontrollably for whatever reason, this tends to be irrational. Because it is irrational, there is no reason for it and it should never be done. It is selfish and ridiculous to use this game as tool to simply dump your anger on whoever got unlucky enough to be paired with you. Be respectful and intelligent enough to express your emotions elsewhere if its needed. There are much healthier and more effective ways to deal with your emotions than that.

    The truth of the matter is that this is a team game where many people are involved for a joint venture at a fun activity. If you feel that your fun should always come first above everyone elses’, then that is simply put, selfish and should never be done. If this is too hard for anyone to accept or refuse to, then this isn’t the game for you and you should play something else. The game was intended to be a team game and that mentality simply doesn’t fit into it. There is no I in team basically. It is very simple to understand yet not difficult to accept for most people. Whether or not you want to admit it, game or not, people do have feelings and you have to respect that. It may be easier to ignore or disregard manners, ethics, or people’s feelings cus its over the internet but that is not an excuse either. Neither does it matter that its just a game.

    The failure for many people to accept this is why this system is being put in and is a direct result of the community’s shortcomings not Riots. Anyone can keep on saying that its all Riot’s this or that or that its all a broken system, but the fact of the matter is that if you continue to behave like your always blameless and do not try to improve the game for everyone then you leave Riot no other choice then to implement things like this.

    You can always quit the game if you choose to be stubborn, close minded or think that that is unfair, but then that’s what they were looking to happen anyways, now wasn’t it. ;)

    January 30th, 2013 at 19:10 | #13

    The main reason that this system is being created is probably because of all the people who believe that Tribunal is a load of raging pre-teens spamming the ban button. Strangely enough, people do NOT get banned for dropping an F-bomb. The column showing Tribunal bans on News of Legends may be misleading in that regard. People only get permabanned on Tribunal if they are repeat offenders. Even the most toxic player gets a chance to redeem themselves after one round of Tribunal, and as statistics would show, ~70% of people get their act together. The Tribunal isn’t perfect by any means, but I would rather Riot stick with a human system than a bot.

    I’d rather they do something about rage quitters, afkers and people with little to no skill playing ranked.

    @Dave

    I hope you mean Ban and not PBE. PBE stands for Public Beta Environment. And Riot can ban anyone who has bought in-game materials (boosts, skins, etc.) It is in their T.O.S that they reserve all rights to terminate your account or suspend it EVEN if you made any purchases. This is why they and everyone should encourage players to treat other people with respect, if this would happen then this Automatic System would of never been developed.

  16. Blitz
    January 30th, 2013 at 18:38 | #16

    well, as some1 has already said, this bans should be checked by a human, at least permabans…but i think that the solution (and call me crazy if u want, i know its nearly unreachable) will be, instead of permaban toxic ppl, just ban soloQ for that ppl…like..make all permabanned ppl play together, cuz if u ban a troll, he/she would just make another account and fuck the low lvl game.

    im not sure if i’ve made my point clear, sorry for my english T.T

  17. RandomBro
    January 30th, 2013 at 18:05 | #17

    Great! Only thing that needs to be made sure is if this system will work the same on ranked and normals, as in normals people tend to play without really worrying about score, and if it will act like a parent, banning you on first Foul word, or as a reasonable person that bans you after intense swear all game long.

    If it has the potential to remove flamers and ragers (if you want to remove bad players get 2300 elo first), without considering out-of-meta picks, the 1% false is completely worthy.

    the problem is people say bad things about the tribunal because they have never used it and dont know how it works. The tribunal doesnt go “oh hey, i think this guy should be perma-banned” after a high ratio of reported to played games you are put in the tribunal. Usually first and second time punishes are just warnings after that its a time ban and after 3-10 time bans its a perma-ban. This doesnt seem to work well with the automatic ban because people do get frustrated…. the tribunal will notice this when they go (as in my last game) wow that vayne went 0-34-2 that guy mst be really frustrated and he didnt do someting TOO bad. here its… oh fuk comes up a few times in the chat or too many words are being asterisked out this guy needs to be punished. Riot is doing this because people that havent used the tribunal say its broken how some people with minimal harassment get perma or time while heavy cursing and racial comments only warnings. This is cuz the time/perma have been reported and punished A LOT while warnings are first time offenders. and to to this lack on knowledge they complain and to shut em up Riot comes up with this bad idea with a 1/100 ban incorrect rate. (thanks if you read all this i know its a ton of words :D )

    January 30th, 2013 at 15:03 | #28

    Imo, this should only be for ranked matches, and let the normal games be what it is today. No point in making the game to something that is not fun. but in ranked, I think it’s a fantastic idea .

  32. Jimmie
    January 30th, 2013 at 14:11 | #32

    I personally think that this is good, but this should only ban if players have already been banned by the tribunal before, and if they get picked in this system, they should be earmarked to be checked by the Tribunal if they haven’t already.

  33. Demoyn
    January 30th, 2013 at 14:10 | #33

    The Tribunal was a joke and this is even worse. If you’d ban the people who troll and suck (mostly 10-16 year olds) then the harassment would come to a halt overnight. Nobody wants to play with trolls and baddies… ESPECIALLY not in a game with a team-based ELO ranking system.

  34. muCio
    January 30th, 2013 at 13:42 | #34

    See that’s why soloQ sucks balls cus people like you DO NOT CARE and if you DO NOT CARE then don’t play and don’t destroy the game for people who actually care and try to get better. People do argue and people are leaving the game because someone who dont give a f*** is destryoing the game for them.

    @Kaivora
    Who cares about what you pick in normals? I’ve played solo normals with 5 ap carries in my team and those games are among the most fun games I’ve ever played. (Since it’s hilarious to wait in a the bottom brush for someone to get in range and then just jump out with ahri, leblanc, ori, malzahar and fiddlesticks).

    If you want to be a try-hard, you should be playing ranked, and as long as you’re not intentionally losing the game and ruining the fun for everyone, tribunal wont ban you for your pick. (Even though they’re patronizing, condescending and overly politically correct leftists with a pickle in their arse who enjoy the feeling of authority they get from pushing the ban button).

    And to be honest, the metagame in it’s current state is as flexible as it has ever been in LoL. I can still feel the hate you got when you picked an ap mid back when the meta was all about putting your adc mid or that you got scolded for suggesting a laneswap.

    This cant be true, there are many youtubers, who picks troll picks and still own with it, and it wont be smart to let a bot ban, there are people who spend a lot of money, like me, on League Of Legends, and like Tom said;

    Tom :
    Many people don’t think the severity of 1% false positive rate with such a big player pool. With 32 million monthly active players, 1% of that would be 320,000 players tested as false positive. You never know, you might be one of those and innocently get banned because of it.

I have a feeling a lot of unjust banns will happen because people tend to joke around and most likely will end up being punished for it. Me and many friends have been pushed already to muting everyone that isn’t a friend and turning off all chat because even jokingly the tribunal system sucks people report/ban for stupid reasons as I am sure this will, part of the game is communicating and having fun with joking but having to mute everything because you don’t want ban stops that because you are scared to say one curse word or anything because you might offend the 6 yr old that parents might see it. This WILL ban innocent players. If this system targets intentional feeders, it WILL catch some new players who don’t know how to play the game (I think back to my own first couple of bot games back in the day) …

    If this targets abusive chat players…does it flag Hello as Hell? Does it only hit a couple of specific examples of 4 letter words? Does it just auto-ban the guy who gets reported by the whole enemy team?

    I think this system has potential, but the permabans need to be confirmed by a human, and all bans should be subject to appeal. Short of that, there is no way I could support something like this on a game that I and others put our money into.
