What’s more fun than watching League of Legends? Watching with friends! What’s more fun than watching League of Legends with friends? Watching and making new friends! Summoners across the globe have been organizing events in all kinds of venues to view everything from LCS matches to community videos, and we want to help.
On the new Viewing Party program website, you can register your event to get the word out, or if you’re not the organizing type, find out when and where they’re going on with an interactive map. For the past year, we’ve been reducing champion prices on a fixed schedule, primarily based on champion release dates. With every third champion we release, an additional champion currently priced at 4800 IP or lower will be reduced to the next lowest tier, based on age and ease of play.
Here are the details on our next set of scheduled price reductions. Please note that because these price reductions are preannounced, refunds will not be granted to players who purchase these champions prior to their price reductions.
- For our next champion released (after Lucian): Xerath will be reduced to 4800 IP / 880 RP andMiss Fortune will be reduced to 3150 IP / 790 RP
- For the following champion released: Graves will be reduced to 4800 IP / 880 RP
- For the champion released after that: Shyvana will be reduced to 4800 IP / 880 RP
Despite working here for over a year, I’ve never introduced myself properly to the community, so this is my AMAA – Ask Me Almost Anything.
If I don’t answer your question, I’m either not the right person to answer it, or I’m sworn to secrecy, or I’ve already answered it in the thread.
• My Twitter is @RiotRansom.
• I’m a writer here at Riot, working primarily on champions, new champion concepts, and champion teasers like theZac journals, Quinn’s Freljord journey, and the Aatrox mystery. I also come up with cool special projects like the Lucian login screen!
• In my first days working here, I helped pitched a bunch of new champion concepts like Zed, Vi, Thresh, and Nami.
• The first champion I wrote for was Zac. My second champion is #116, who is a FEMALE – can you handle the spoilers?! (I just don’t want to have to refer to her as him/her for the rest of this thread.)
• Quinn X Jarvan OTP. Shyvana who? Actually, my favorite romance in the game is between an existing champ… and a champion who has yet to be released. Runaan disapproves of this romance in the same way your lame parents disapprove of your sweet prom date. Runaan is grumpy like that.
• As I’ve said earlier, if it were up to me, we would pair off all the champions into couples, and then there would be no reason for all this fighting! A prosperous (and romantic!) peace would descend over Runeterra, and League of Legends would become a game about making babies, not about killing people to obtain gold, and then buying items with that gold… to kill even more people! Madness!
• I’m from Texas. So obviously, my dream is to get more cowboys and cowgirls in this game.
• I studied creative writing in college, and then screenwriting in graduate school. Although I learned a ton in film school and it’s a big part of me, I would say that it’s generally not worth the exorbitant tuition you would spend these days. So save your money and don’t go to film school!
• I’ve written a bunch of screenplays. One received an award from the people who give out Oscars. None of them has ever been made into a movie, but that may very well change someday…
• Before Riot, I worked as a writer and level designer on a Star Wars game and the Mercenaries series. I also co-founded a video game company, secured funding from a publisher, and shipped what might very well be the lowest-selling XBLA title of all time.
• A few of my favorite video games: Final Fantasy Tactics, Dead Space, FTL, Wasteland, System Shock 2.
• I’m terrible at LoL, but I’m getting better each and every day because of my positive, non-toxic attitude! My most-played champion is Morgana. Nowadays, I love playing Zyra and Malzahar. I generally like standing in the back and bursting people down, or immobilizing them so other people can kill them. I also jungle Zac (of course) and Sejuani, and jump at the chance to play Ashe when people let me. (Which isn’t often.)
• I have walked across the entire nation of Spain, from the French border all the way to the coast. Five hundred miles – about the same distance as San Francisco to Los Angeles. It took about 30 days.
• I’m more flexible than anyone in my kickboxing class. And I can beat the stuffing out of anyone in my yoga class.
(Champion #116 is female!)
Is the 116th champion, in term of definition, good or evil?
Sneak peek on champ #116 soon?
What is her goal in her life?
Will we get a cool lore teaser for her?
No seriously, dude.
What makes this champion so unique?
Is the next champion going to be hipster?
Will she be a Psychic / Empath?
Ransom: I love reading the speculation of our fans. Sometimes you guys come up with stuff that blows us away, and makes us say, “I wish I had thought of that.” There was this one guy who suspected that the person who slaughtered Tryndamere’s tribe was Tryndamere himself in some sort of frenzied amnesiac state. Freaking awesome.
Will her name be Seven?
What color is her hair?
Okay guys, gotta turn in. I’ll be back tomorrow to answer more questions, and will pick up a few I think I missed but wanted to answer.
I will definitely address the topic of becoming a writer in a future post, but don’t stop with the questions. It’ll help me write that post!
What’s your favourite character trope?
Do you use past life experiences as an influence to the stories you write for League?
How will she respond to:
- the burning of her local library
- her neighbor hosting a very loud party at 2 am
- basket containing 2 kittens left on her doorstep
- another woman trying to make a move on her crush
- She’d run – and not walk – there to burn the fire WITH A BIGGER FIRE.
- She’d throw an even louder party at 2:05 AM.
- I know for a fact that she loves kittens, and this love of kittens is evident in-game!
- Well, she behaves like she couldn’t care less about crushes, so it’s hard to say. The closest thing she has to a crush right now is her admiration for Ziggs: “I like your style, bomb-rat!” is something she might say.
How excited are you about her release?
Ransom: We’re all super excited about #116 here, and we’ve poured a TON of work into her. So many Rioters added extra little touches to her, just so you guys would notice and be happy. She’s a very spoiled girl. We think you guys are gonna fall in love with her. And yes, she most definitely has a rivalry with one of the most popular champions in the game.
How long did it take for you guys to make Champion #116?
Ransom: Champion #116 was born when RiotTeaTime posted a crazy sketch she drew on the wall. Everyone went bonkers and said, WE HAVE TO MAKE THIS. From that point, it took several months to put together a good pitch (she went through a number of revisions). Once we got permission to make her, of course, she spent some time in production.
Does she have any relations to Vayne?
Is Champion #116 associated with Demacia/Noxus/Ionia or is she independent?
Did you write the lines for her VO?
Ransom: Yes, I am the “credited” writer on #116 (for doing most of the work), but I only wrote about a third of her VO script, her bio, and one of her teaser pieces. (Although I was heavily involved in the planning process for her teaser.)
What would you really want to do with League from a lore and story side that isn’t being done currently?
Ransom: Generally, I want do more storytelling, both in the game and out. You’ve already seen some of our efforts to do this with the Lucian login screen – this was the first time we animated the story of a champion, told in his own words. And as far as I can tell, you guys were digging it. So we’d like to do more!
When will we see a continuation of the story between Jayce and Viktor?
Ransom: Trust me, nobody is more excited about continuing the stories of your favorite champs than me and the writing team. Generally speaking, though, we’ve taken faction events like the Freljord event as a way of telling new stories about your favorite champions. I would wager that someday, there might be a similar event for other factions, such as Piltover and Zaun.
Are there any plans for linking the large bits of lore and creating a focused storyline for S4?
Ransom: We’re actively looking into delivering new ways and methods of pushing forward the stories for all champions, new and old, all the time. This is why teasers and crazy login screens and Freljord events are happening. So while it may not happen immediately, you can tell from recent history that we’re clearly moving in this direction.
How is the Frelijord event going to be resolved?
Ransom: Every time we do an event, the state of the world moves forward in time. And all those changes in the world are persistent. You can safely assume that every new event and teaser and login screen we do builds off what came before.
Who would you pair Riven with?
Why are Zac and Twitch friends?
Do you ever feel constrained by the game in telling story?
Ransom: Yup, all the time. The world of Runeterra is really complicated and has a lot of history. I can’t just write any old story unless it fits in the universe. One of my biggest frustrations when I first started working here was pitching a new champion, only to be told that the story I wanted to write was already in the game in some form I didn’t like.
So yeah – it’s pretty difficult, if not impossible, to conceive of a story in which a champion dies. And that’s a big limitation. But no different than what Marvel and DC go through with their superheroes. I mean – do you ever think Batman is going to die?
When will Champions with outdated backstories (Maokai, Brand, Nocturne) get their lore updated?
Any plans to make Renekton’s lore more intriguing?
Is Zyra going to be included in any lore?
Ransom: Good point. A lot of our indepedent champs – champs without a faction – tend to be a little isolated. That’s why we try to give most champs a relationship – rivalry, romantic, etc. – with another champ: to reinforce their place in the world. Thanks for bringing this up. I’ll bring it up in our discussons!
Do you know of any plans to develop story related to the Void?
Ransom: You can assume that we are working on story for all factions that have not yet gotten their moment in the spotlight. And to be honest, adding interactions for champions already in the game is possible, but we focus our resources on newer champs because messing with old ones can get messy. That being said, I can see a day in the future when we go back and retrofit the older champs.
Will there be an end to lore re-writes?
Will the Shadow Isles be the new Freljord in terms of lore development?
Ransom: The Shadow Isles had an event when Elise was released – a bunch of champions had their lore updated. And we just released a Shadow Isles rival in the form of Lucian. So it’s going to be a while. But! I would say when the next Shadow Isles champion is released (and I honestly don’t know when that is), we’ll find out more about this mysterious and dreadful place.
Where did Riven learn to control her Ki?
Ransom: Let’s just say there’s a lot about Riven’s past that we don’t know yet. And that she’ll have to come to terms with it. And that it’ll be difficult for her. She’s got a long road ahead of her, but no different from the one that we all face. We’re all growing, all the time!
Will all the lorewise “couples” be straight? If so, won’t that be boring?
Ransom: Great point. There’s definitely an oversight here, and we do spend some time discussing same-*** relationships on the team – particularly Runaan. All I can say is we are always looking for ways to strengthen the world of our game. As for Riven x Irelia, I would need to know more about Irelia as a person in order to really believe it – as much as I like playing her, I feel she’s a bit thin. And I’d love to take a shot at giving her more story someday.
Will you be implementing Eastern-themed tropes in champions’ stories now that LoL’s become so popular in Asia?
Is Vayne the only Night Hunter?
Ransom: I too am curious about whether she works alone or as part of a team, especially in light of the fact that Lucian has a very similar job and is also from Demacia. I honestly do not have the answers here. I just think it’s interesting.
Do you see a future where Katarina and Riven join forces?
Any plans on writing “what if” stories on skins?
Isn’t it better to add more lore instead of reworking the existing one?
Ransom: Great question. As you’ve noticed, most of our bios are Chapter Ones – telling the beginning of a champion’s story. In the Freljord event, we continued the stories for many champions. So yes – we want to do more Chapter Twos. The question is: what’s the best way to do that? We’re still figuring that out.
Is there a plan to make it easier to catch up on lore?
Ransom: Great idea. We’ve been talking about having a home for teasers on the Lol.com website. And as I said earlier, I’d also like to have the writing team have some sort of ongoing presence online, putting out episodic content of some kind.
Thoughts on Ahri getting a rival?
But that’s a secret to nobody
What would be your perfect champion, if you had no restrictions in its making?
Ransom: Almost certainly a ranged mage or marksman of some kind. I spoke earlier of my dream of getting more cowboys and cowgirls in the game. I also have found that I tend to gravitate to the fantasy of the formidable, unapproachable female: Morgana, Zyra, and Lissandra. That probably says something about me.
Who do you think is the most well made champion in league?
Do you think we’ll see stories that include showing a champion not with their default look?
Ransom: I love this idea. The trick here is that you have to plan really far in advance to make it work. You’d have to go going into making the skin and the CG that this is the plan from like, day zero. But that being said, if we could pull it off, it would be awesome.
Ransom: What I’m hearing a lot from you guys is that you would love to see more lore-related skins. Me too! I’ll start pitching more of these ideas to the skins team. I personally would KILL KILL KILL for a Redeemed Morgana skin, one where she looks pleasant and heroic.
As for the fact that our department is so darn sporadic and slow, all I can say is that we are working at getting better at putting out more stuff in a timely fashion, and you can see that in our teasers, our events, and our lore reworks. And I’d like to think that we’re raising the bar with every release.
Given the amount of work the JoJ was for the writers who worked on it, and how busy those guys are now, I can’t say I see it coming back. But! Another takeaway here is that the writing team needs to think about a project where we put out small bits of stuff on a regular basis. That’s a good suggestion, and something we can definitely think about! Thanks for this suggestion – I’ll start spinning up some ideas.
How do you feel about Aatrox now that he’s in game, especially in regards to how his story and gameplay clash?
Ransom: We try our best with every champion, and ideally, theme and gameplay are always a perfect match. I think Aatrox delivers on the fantasy of being a powerful war demon – and that passive is terrifying in a way that really suits the big guy. I think you make a good point that his lore would seem to suggest that he have more abilities that rally his allies, and it was definitely a point of dicussion for the people who worked oh him.
Personally, my feeling is that I want to make sure that the gameplay of a champion is rock solid, and not to write anything that would interfere with the kit. But we also want to tell a cool story. Sometimes these things are in perfect harmony, sometimes there is friction. That’s the job.
Will we have an old, wise wizard character (Gandalf, Merlin) somewhere down the line?
Ransom: All I can tell you is that I personally would love to see something along these lines. But having pitched a ton of new champion concepts here, it would have to be the right character at the right time with the right stuff. And that is like catching lightning in a bottle. Sometimes it happens, as it did with Vi. It actually took Vi quite a few tries to become approved as a champion – but once we figured her out, it all came together really quickly.
What’s your favorite thing about working at Riot?
Ransom: Hanging out with some of my favorite people and talking about our favorite champs all day. Also, working on secret stuff and getting excited because we know it would BLOW YOUR MINDS if you knew.
Is it true you made 5 champion concepts on your first week/month working for Riot?
Why did you decide to visit Spain? Was it a religious thing?
Ransom: Lol, yes it was a pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago – it began as a Catholic pilgrimage, but it’s become an epic adventure in its own right. I highly recommend it to anyone, because it will change your life. I was not living in Spain – it was just a long vacation.
Follow-up: When did you make your journey?
Ransom: The best time to walk across Spain, weather-wise, is early May. I saw a funeral, explored remote villages and had meals with the locals, and I actually did walk through Pamplona, but it was not time for the bulls yet.
How do I get a gig like yours?
Who’s your favourite champion?
Ransom: You asked who my favorite is from a lore/concept standpoint, and I’m totally stumped. I’ll instead answer by telling you my coworkers believe my spirit champion – the champion who most resembles me in spirit – is Shen. This is probably because a) I like to protect people and coming to their aid, and b) I also enjoy being sneaky and backdooring.
Where did you attend college?
When did you start writing?
Ransom: When I was in third grade my teacher liked to make us write stories. I loved doing it so much that I never stopped, even though my stories were completely unoriginal rip-offs and parodies of movies I loved.
Which’re your favourite books?
Follow-up: What do you enjoy about Murakami’s writing?
Ransom: What I love about Murakami is the way that he combines the language of the hardboiled detective novel with the supernatural elements of, say, Lost. Murakami is a huge Lost fan, by the way. I think his biggest weakness as a writer is his failure to end many of his novels satisfyingly. That’s not entirely his fault – he is so masterful at building suspense and mystery that how could he ever pay it off?
What’s your best role and champion and what would you say is your biggest weakness?
Is it true you’ve worked on the Mercenary series?
How did you manage to co-found a gaming company?
Ransom: We basically gathered a bunch of game developers who were laid off from their jobs, joined forces, drew up some game pitches, and convinced a publisher to give us a small budget. Anytime a game studio closes, it’s the perfect time to convince some dudes to collaborate on a small indie project. They’ve got free time, and they don’t want to work for a big company for a while!
Did you ever get so hooked to a game that you forgot your responsibilities?
Do you have any plans for adding a story mode/campaign mode for League of Legends?
Are you interested in making more ninja Champions?
Ransom: If it were up to me, there would be twenty more ninjas. And there’s no rule that says there won’t be another – but as I said earlier, it has to be the right character. Zed was a no-brainer because we had never done an evil ninja master, and he is the best evil ninja master we could make.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that none of the other ninjas truly delivered on the shadowy deceptive fantasy of a ninja, although Akali does have the shroud and the blink. Which is another reason why we made Zed.
Thoughts on unorthodox builds?
Which comes first- the Champion or the story?
Ransom: Usually, the writer comes on board last, after seeing some artist sketches and some gameplay ideas. But this is because we writers are lazy. We should be coming up with more of our own champion pitches!
What’s your favorite “unexplored” area of Runeterra?
Who’s your least favourite champion?
Who would you say is the most mechanically difficult mid laner for you to play?
Who’s the most beautiful/hottest Champion in LoL in your opinion?
Ransom: This actually came up in my job interview. I said at the time that I thought Leona was prettiest in her splash, but now I think the prettiest depiction of a female in LoL is Blood Moon Akali as seen here.
Where did you get your username from?
When will we see a new yordle champion?
How do you feel about slash pairings?
Why is Mundo only friends with Mundo?
How do you feel about Lux and Taric frolicking in the background of Pool Party Leona’s splash art?
(Context: Ransom talks about his favourite romance in LoL – between an already released champion and an upcoming one)
Let’s fight about it.
You’re not the Love Police. I’m just letting you know.
You cannot bend the gravitational pull known as shipping to only the champions you want, Runaan. If you are not careful, the darkness will overtake you and Zed x Zed Shadow Clone will be a thing.
A dedicated Tribunal case reviewer, Summoner Tsaalyo has decided to express some concerns regarding the system after extensively judging other players.
Tsaalyo: Hey all. Some people may remember me from this thread last year, and here I am again. I now sit at 5,426 correct Tribunal cases, 91.2% accuracy, rating of 162,856, ranked 57 overall. My actions have permabanned 213 players. Myself, I’ve never been banned, or even warned.
This is where some people will thumbsdown and click Back. Props to the rest of you for reading beyond this line.
So, I’ve been doing my daily 20 cases virtually every day since the Justice Review came out. Here’s what I think about the Tribunal as it exists today.
Last year, Riot changed how Tribunal cases are compiled. If I remember correctly, the Tribunal used to compile 1-5 random games in which the player was reported, whereas today, the Tribunal tries its’ best to get the max of 5 games, and selects the ‘worst’ ones, the ones that got the player into the Tribunal. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works… and it sure as hell is what I’ve observed. Since Riot made this change, the cases immediately got MUCH worse. There are many days where all 20 cases are a Punish. It used to be that maybe 4 or even 5 of 20 were Pardonable, but today, more than one in a day is something to write home about.
I’m really not sure how I feel about that.
On the one hand, there’s nothing I can say to defend players who go all “OMG THIS TEAM TRASH NOOB **** YOU ***** ASS ****MUFFIN FEED TIME”. But it seems to me that a lot of the cases that I Punish ARE a clear violation of the Summoner’s code… but at the same time, I can relate to what the person is feeling. The “**** YOU ****FACE” is one thing, but I’m finding it kind of hard to justify punishing the guy who says, at 50 minutes in, “omg I pinged back you idiot, way to throw.”. In most games, that’s where the guy on the receiving end gets all defensive, and the inevitable argument breaks out as the nexus is pushed down. Four letter words are flung both ways, and by the Summoner’s Code, what results is a punish. I punish those cases because them’s the rules, but I don’t know if they should be. I think Riot should officially come out and tell us to go easier on this.
The Tribunal is not full of autopunishers, despite what some people may have you believe. Pardons do happen, and they’re almost always by a landslide. We who do the Tribunal, for the most part, strictly follow the rules Riot outlined for us. This worked great before, but since Riot made the change to how cases are compiled, entry into the Tribunal a basically guaranteed punishment. And that means that, unless all your reports are blatantly false, every single player here will eventually be banned.
This game is getting more and more competitive, and that means bad plays get more and more frustrating. Based on this, I think the rules regarding good behavior are getting too strict. They worked great when the meta wasn’t as established and people were still learning the “best” ways to play, but now that all that is basically concrete, people’s mistakes become more frustrating. And at this point, I just don’t think the answer to this is to punish people for briefly blowing a gasket when a player makes a stupid play 65 minutes in, and then arguing with the player who inevitably gets overly defensive. I’d like a statement from Riot clarifying the difference between “**** YOUR ****TY **** COCKMUFFIN TIME TO FEED”, and that.
Thanks for reading my jumbled rambling.
I enjoy reading your insights a lot. There’s a few things I’d like to clarify. You’re right, awhile back we decided to change some of the criteria in the case-building process for Tribunal; for example, one of the changes was to change the minimum number of games required for a case. This change was to improve the accuracy of the system and give voters more information because we saw that cases with just 1 game tended to be less accurate (when compared to our internal audits).
However, the Tribunal system is finely tuned to only tackle the worst of the worst offenders in the game. As League of Legends evolves and the Tribunal punishes the worst offenders (and they reform or leave the game), the ‘criteria’ for getting into the Tribunal does not change. This means that the Tribunal doesn’t just start looking for ‘less and less bad players’ to punish. This means that over time, you will not see everyone eventually be punished because of false reports.. That’s impossible, because the system only targets the worst and most consistent offenders. To give a concrete example, even if you get ‘real’ reports once in awhile over years of League of Legends, you will never end up in the Tribunal.
One thing I will say is that we (Riot) won’t come out and tell players how to vote in the Tribunal. This community is the players’ community, and I enjoy seeing players have discussions like this one to determine what behavior is appropriate or not within this community. If the players come out and say the Summoner’s Code needs to be revised, then let’s have that discussion and I’d be happy to help facilitate and support changes.
This splash art is the work of Summoner DonVilla. Give him a thumbs up on his personal blog if you like his work!
