You can find additional teasers on the PROJECT minisite. Similar to last year, you can see blueprints of the weapons the champions’re using.

You start by typing one of three words: FREEDOM, UNITY or AMBITION. Each word will then have three floating circles that contain a phrase or a weapon blueprint:

LORE UPDATES Banner

Diana, Leona and Pantheon have all received updated in-client lore entries:

Diana Final Portrait

”I am the light coursing in the soul of the moon.”

Bearing her crescent moonblade, Diana fights as a warrior of the Lunari, a faith all but quashed in the lands around Mount Targon. Clad in shimmering armor the color of winter snow at night, she is a living embodiment of the silver moon’s power. Imbued with the essence of an Aspect from beyond Targon’s towering summit, Diana is no longer wholly human, and struggles to divine herpower and purpose in this world.

Leona Final Portrait

”If you would shine like a sun, first you must burn like one.”

Imbued with the fire of the sun, Leona is a warrior templar of the Solari who defends Mount Targon with her Zenith Blade and Shield of Daybreak. Her skin shimmers with starfire while her eyes burn with the power of the celestial Aspect within her. Armored in gold and bearing a terrible burden of ancient knowledge, Leona brings enlightenment to some, death to others.

Pantheon Final Portrait

”Bring forth one true champion, or a hundred more like you, and then we shall have a battle that will be spoken of until the end of time.”

The peerless warrior known as Pantheon is a nigh-unstoppable paragon of battle. He was born among the Rakkor, a warlike people living on the flanks of Mount Targon, and after climbing the mountain’s treacherous peak and being deemed worthy, he was chosen to become the earthly incarnation of the celestial Aspect of War. Imbued with inhuman power, he relentlessly seeks the enemies of Targon, leaving only corpses in his wake.

Riot should take a break from making new Champions for awhile

Yi Wreck Shen: We all agree that new champions are fun and exiting, but there are a lot of things riot needs to work on to better balance league and make it anext even better game.

  1. Rework the champs that needs reworks. Getting Ashe was basically like getting a new champion. It brought a lot of people to pbe and was and is a very popular pick now. Saw some lcs Play too. There are a ton of champs that need minor tweaks or complete reworks. Balancing what you have already presented us should be priotithere. There are a ton of champ options and diversity now.
  2. Learning champs is incredibly hard for new players. This game gets bigger every day. I started playing a year and half ago. Learning every champ and what they did toOK a very long time. I have only played probably about 25% of the roster. There are so many champs already and you have to master a few if you want to get anywhere in ranked. How can you expect all these champs you took time into making to get played by noobits when there is a new champ released every month and said players are trying to learn and findo already released players they may like.
  3. Why do I have to go on Lolking.net to figure out ratios and what not for champions? Why is the in game description of skills less descriptive then online? Why are certain things even left out in game description? Like the fact hecarim can move through creeps and a bunch of others.

This game is great but I feel like it’s time to start doing some fine tuning and it would make the game experience a lot more enjoyable. FixING champs and reworking them is like a new champ in itsself. We basically got two new champs back to back with Ashe and Ekko. Work on fixing poppy/Taric/Yorrik etc. Then those champs will get a bunch of play again.

Ghostcrawler New PortraitWe have separate teams making new champions and updating old champions. While we could probably increase the update cadence if we collapsed the first team, we do get some benefits of working in parallel.

Figuring out the right cadence of new champions releases is something we talk about A LOT. There was a belief a few years ago that we were going to freak out players (new and existing) if we kept shipping 20 champions a year. On the other hand, getting a new champion is one of the most exciting things that can happen to the game for existing players. I think the game might actually start feeling stale if we stopped releasing new champs. We’d like to figure out a way to release them a little more frequently than we have done the last year or so, if we can do that without affecting quality.

We understand it’s a challenge for new players to learn League and that adding more champions over time doesn’t help with that. But, honestly, we feel like it’s the right thing to do to support you guys, you know actual League players, than starve you for content in the hopes of getting new players. There is a lot we can, should, and eventually will do to make League easier to learn, but I worry about any strategy that improves the learning curve at the expense of current players.

Why was Ashes Q nerfed against towers

For reference, here’s the Ashe nerf in question (part of this PBE update):

Ashe Final Portrait

Nerf BoxRangers Focus Final IconRanger’s Focus [ Q ]

  • Active can no longer target structures

Meddler Final PortraitThat’s the thinking here. Where possible we’d like to create or preserve distinctive strengths on different champions, particular those within the same class (ADCs in this case). Jinx and Trist are both really good at destroying buildings, it’s a defining characteristic for them. Ashe by contrast’s distinguished from other ADCs most by the sheer amount of CC she brings. Since we feel Ashe is too strong at present we need to nerf her, we’re trying to do so in ways that ensure that Ashe continues to offer a different impact on the game, and a really distinct experience for people playing her however.

Removing a character’s strengths, or giving them strengths that overlap too much with other characters, risks creating a really homogenized game, where, even if you see a wide range of characters played, the difference between them’s not very significant, so it still feels samey. Removing unnecessary strengths, if a champion is overpowered, is the approach we prefer as a result.

Diamond 5 LP Gain Changes

Socrates New PortraitHey all,

Right now, some players in Diamond 5 receive unusually low LP gains and losses. We’re releasing a change that should smooth out gains for most of the affected players. That said, a small number of D5 players close to being demoted will continue to see low gains until they climb back to a high enough MMR to move through Diamond.

There won’t be any down time as we release this to each region.

Champion Update: Ashe

Champion Update: Ashe takes aim at PBE

BY FIZZNCHIPS

Another old timer within League’s ever-deepening champion pool, Ashe has seen almost six years shoot by with her launch kit largely intact. Until now! We’re not rebuilding her from the ground up, but we have made some pretty meaningful changes to her abilities all intended to solidify Ashe as League’s premier utility carry. Finally, we’re also sliding in a couple of small tweaks to give her opponents more ways to play against her. Here’s a rundown of her new moves!

Frost Shot Final IconPassive: [NEW] Frost Shot

Ashe slows whoever she damages with her basic attacks and abilities.

Ashe’s basic attacks always deal bonus damage to slowed targets, replacing her ability to critically strike. Bonus damage increases with her critical strike chance.

Rangers Focus Final IconQ: [NEW] Ranger’s Focus

Passive: Ashe gains a stack of Focus whenever she slows an enemy, up to a cap of five stacks.

Active: Ashe gains a small amount of attack speed and applies a heavier Frost Shot slow for a few seconds. If Ashe has fully stacked her Focus, she also fires out a fast salvo of arrows with every basic attack for the ability’s duration.

Volley Final IconW: Volley

Ashe nocks several arrows on her bow before firing them simultaneously in a large cone before her. Each arrow deals damage and slows its victim.

[NEW] Ashe fires more arrows than before. Targets are more likely to be hit by multiple arrows, but they’ll only take damage from one.

Hawkshot Final IconE: Hawkshot

Ashe commands her hawk to scout out an area. The hawk travels slowly, revealing areas it passes as it heads towards the target direction. Once the hawk reaches its destination, it hovers for a few seconds, revealing all non-stealthed units, even in brush.

[NEW] Hawkshot now has a global range. Ashe can store up to 2 Hawkshots for quick use, too.

Enchanted Crystal Arrow Final IconR: Enchanted Crystal Arrow

Ashe fires a huge ice missile in a target direction, damaging and stunning the first enemy champion it hits, with the stun duration dependant on the distance the missile travels. Enchanted Crystal Arrow also damages and slows all neutral and enemy targets surrounding its victim.

ashe-imageCheck out the abilities above and you’ll see that most of our changes focus on taking out the less exciting aspects of her kit. Frost Shot, for instance, was a pretty dull ability: you either had the ability on and slowed your targets while slowly losing mana, or you didn’t. At the same time, we really liked the idea of Ashe as a kind of utility marksman, someone who brings unrivalled crowd control and vision to games compared to other champs in her class. So we moved Frost Shot to her passive, simultaneously kicking her old toggle to the side while opening up her Q for something new. Ranger’s Focus fills the gap, providing Ashe with incentives for staying in combat (versus her old passive, which literally rewarded you for not attacking), and giving her a decent spike in damage when she handles her Focus stacks effectively.

As for the other part of her passive, removing crit strikes from a marksman might feel unintuitive – they’re pretty central to a bunch of basic attack damage dealers – but Frost Shot still rewards Ashe for building crit. Thing is, instead of hoping to get the occasional nuke, Ashe players will consistently deal extra damage as they build crit, and even more damage when they build that old staple of hers: Infinity Edge.

The changes to Ashe’s passive and Q enhances her basic attack-focused gameplay during all stages of a game. She shoots things, builds up Focus, then uses Ranger’s Focus to deal extra damage alongside her basic attacks. That left Volley too strong, so we tweaked it. We gave Ashe more rounds in her Volley, so if she’s able to cast it from distance, she can theoretically hit more targets and instantly fully stack her Focus. However, to compensate, we retooled the ability so that enemies and neutral targets are now much more likely to absorb multiple arrows. Old Ashe could fairly reliably hit enemy targets through their minion wave, something that’ll be much harder to pull off with the updated ability. This means enemy frontliners can get up in Ashe’s face now and reliably tank every Volley round for their backline squishies. These changes should emphasize Volley as a tool for Focus development and crowd control rather than raw power and poke, and although it’ll be less of a threat during laning, the ability will have a bigger presence in teamfights, particularly when Ashe positions herself correctly.

Finally, we took out the old Hawkshot passive because it basically gave Ashe a bunch of invisible power. Instead, we gave her tangible power by significantly improving her E active! Turning Hawkshot into a global ability – and allowing her to store multiple charges – gives Ashe and her team an immediate and immense vision bump, particularly when the enemy team’s effectively killing your network of wards. By firing out multiple Hawkshots, Ashe can use their vision to scout out Baron and the surrounding brush for signs of impending Fnatic-style brush baits. You now have no excuse for facechecking!

Ashe heads out onto PBE today. Take her for a spin and let us know your thoughts on the Frost Archer’s new kit! For more champion update team news, head over to the gameplay and balance subcommunity!

Why does the CDR of his passive scale with the CD on Overload Q

Repertoir New PortraitIt’s not so much that his passive becomes less effective as it just stays equally powerful throughout the game regardless of CDR levels. This contrasts with his Live passive which scales incredibly well with CDR.

[ Link to Post ]

Follow Up

Does this mean that his passive will become less effective later in the game

Repertoir New PortraitTry not to think of it as the passive becoming less effective with CDR, and try to think of it this way…

During your passive regardless of your current CDR value:
Q’s cooldown gets reduced by 100% when it gets reduced by other spellcasts
W’s cooldown gets reduced by ~20% when it gets reduced by other spellcasts
E’s cooldown gets reduced by ~50% when it gets reduced by other spellcasts
R’s cooldown gets reduced by ~5/7/10% (based on spell rank, since its cooldown goes down with rank) when it gets reduced by other spellcasts

If the amount the cooldowns got reduced was unaffected by CDR, W’s base cooldown would have to be something like 25 seconds so that W’s weren’t overlapping, Q’s cooldown would have to be closer to 6 seconds, etc.

[ Link to Post ]

So Ryzes Q will never go on cooldown during his passive

Repertoir New PortraitIt means that while he is supercharged from his passive, casting a spell will basically reset his Q, so you can perfectly Q every other spell.

Follow Up

Does this mean that casting a spell will reduce the CD of every other spell

Repertoir New PortraitCorrect. It’s like the old passive, but an amped up version.

Q reduces W/E/R
W reduces Q/E/R
E reduces Q/W/R
R reduces Q/W/E

[ Link to Post ]

Youre removing a lot of the consistency the old Ryze had

Repertoir New PortraitOne thing we’ve done already to accompany Ryze’s reduced reliability and reliance on charging his passive is to reduce the cost of his Q and increased his Mana Regen per level. These changes should actually be a net buff to Ryze overall, so if it seems like they just make him worse, we will have to adjust upward. With a long duration on his passive stacks (12 seconds currently), he can roam to mid from top, or bot from mid, spamming a few Qs along the way, and have his passive ready to go when he gets there. Until very recently, these stacks were infinite duration (Annie/Malz style), and he would just sit on them forever and people could never approach him. I still want him to be able to threaten opponents by sitting on high stacks for awhile, just not forever.

Why does the new Ryze get so much Cooldown Reduction from his ult

Repertoir New PortraitIt will only negatively impact his itemization insofar as Frozen Heart will be a little less attractive and other AP items will be a little more attractive. He’s also had some AP ratios boosted to further make AP items a bit more attractive.

[ Link to Post ]

Follow Up

Repertoir New PortraitRyze’s old passive worked extremely favorably with CDR (flat 1 second off cooldowns on cast), but the new one doesn’t to the same extent (because the reduction scales with Overload’s cooldown). Because of this, the CDR is now built in and you can choose a different item in the place of Frozen Heart without feeling like you’re missing a core item, or you can just go over the cap a bit and build the FH.

[ Link to Post ]

Is the 30 CDR bonus meant to make Frozen Heart less optimal on Ryze

Repertoir New PortraitWe are trying to make Frozen Heart somewhat less attractive, yes. We like Tear+RoA as core items on Ryze, but with having a third core item in Frozen Heart, he really had very little build flexibility whatsoever. This gives him a bit more build flexibility to build things like Zhonya’s, Abyssal, Luden’s Echo, GA, etc. without just spamming the same three items for his first ~9k gold.

Would maxing E over Q be an effective strategy

Repertoir New PortraitMaxing E is probably a bit of a gamble because of the 60/70/80/90/100 Mana cost on it, as well as the fact that Q’s base damage and Mana ratio both increase with rank in it. That said, if the opponent wants to stand in the middle of the minions and eat multi-hit E’s, it’s probably an effective strategy.

[ Link to Post ]

Are the lowered base stats meant to make Ryze squishy without the shield

Repertoir New PortraitYep, he’s intended to be a bit tankier with passive up, and a bit squishier without it up. If he gets on you during his passive, prepare to feel bullied. If not, try to push him around.

[ Link to Post ]

Why was the cooldown on Rune Prison

Repertoir New PortraitW cooldown was a change made so that he could keep the spell with his new passive. Earlier this week in playtests, Ryze could hit you with Rune Prison while you were already in Rune Prison if his passive was up.

[ Link to Post ]

Will Ryze also receive a visual update

Repertoir New PortraitWe hope to hit model and animations at a later time, but due to some unforeseen issues, we couldn’t yet do them, and we didn’t want to hold the VFX/SFX/Gameplay until whenever that might be.

Champion Update Schedule

Scruffy Final PortraitThings that we are currently working on:

-Ryze (duh)
-Ashe (small scope)
-Gangplank
-Poppy
-Taric
-Urgot
-Fiora
-Shen
-Yorick (just started, so a ways off)

This doesn’t mean 100% expect to see these in the next year, sometimes things get modified or put on hold. Not every one of these projects is like Sion in size and scope as well, the update is meant to fit the needs of the champ. Also, don’t have a lot of details to share on the specifics of these, but info will come in time.

Hope that answers your question.

[ Link to Post ]

Whats the scope of Gangplanks rework

Scruffy Final PortraitIt’s somewhere between Ryze and Sion I’d say. There are some iconic abilities that we wanted to preserve on GP’s kit so it’s not quite as big of a change as Sion. Not much concrete info to give out right now but look forward to it, it’s gonna be really fun.

[ Link to Post ]

Its okay to have simple champions in the game

Scruffy Final PortraitI totally agree. Some of the best designs are the simplest. A lot of rich decision making and very complex play can come from something as simple as Singed Q. I hope that rather than try to add more mechanics we can improve our designs in the future by getting more value from less (“elegance” in a nutshell).

This will be especially key on some of our historically simple mechanic champions (Taric for example). We are making it a goal to add more depth and interest to his play without over complicating the kit or increasing the mechanical floor.

[ Link to Post ]

Sions rework was the best rework in a while

Scruffy Final PortraitI’m really glad you’re enjoying the new Sion as much as we are. We definitely hope to try and build on the learnings from what we did with him for future large champion updates (see poppy, urgot, taric, yorick etc).

The goal is to take the core of what was really resonant and good about the old champion and try to enhance and deliver on it rather than discard. This often doesn’t mean that you keep the exact abilities and art details, but everything we make for the updated champion should feed back into that core theme. A coherent and consistent champion leads to the most fun and compelling character.

All of the feedback we get from the community (positive and negative) helps us improve and find inspiration for how to keep elevating LoL to be a more fun and competitive experience.

Recent changes to Quick Cast with Range Indicators

RickVanPrim: [Quick visibility thing – we’re posting this in English first but getting it localized for all regions as soon as possible.]

Hey folks,

Due to internal miscommunication, two important changes to Quick Cast shipped in patch 5.7 but never made it into the patch notes.

So what did we change and why?

The first change is a bug and affects normal and quick cast with range indicators only. Using the right mouse click to cancel abilities should cancel on mouse down, not mouse up (as in releasing the button), as you may have noticed. This has made cancelling abilities using the right mouse click difficult and unresponsive.

The second change was intentional for quick cast when used with range indicators. In order to make chucking out a quick series of abilities more responsive and predictable (think Brand, Annie, or Ryze unleashing their combos), we changed this behavior to fire the first ability held down when the second ability is pressed. Basically we assumed that if you pressed a button, you were committed to using that ability (a la quick cast) and if you decided to press another button, that was because you were trying to cast something else.

What we didn’t account for was that some players were using quick cast with range indicators in a different way, where they would hold down each button to get the range of the ability before releasing it to pull off a combo. In other words, they were basically ‘queueing’ up abilities by holding down buttons – releasing a button was their version of “quick cast.”

That said, from a lot of discussion it’s clear we’ve introduced tons of disruption without much context for players who used it to test ranges. Sorry!

So here’s what we’re going to do.

We are fixing the right mouse cancel bug and re-implementing the old quick cast with range indicator behavior. In other words, abilities will continue to fire on button release, rather than on button press.

In the meantime, we’re going to be re-examining the problem space for players who want to better understand their champion’s ranges while maintaining the responsiveness of true quick cast (that is, on button press). Any future solutions here will not disrupt existing play and most likely live on their own as an option.

One last thing, to alleviate some of the existing pain of using quick cast with range indicators, we’ll be adding individual ability and item binds for this input type in an upcoming patch.

Thanks for your patience and feedback here! We’ll be trying to get this in as soon as possible (it could potentially take as long as patch 5.8 due to the scope and stability of the changes, sorry!).

I will be around throughout the day to answer questions or try to give more context into what has changed. I hope this helps clarify things.

Can we have an update on Warwicks rework

Scruffy Final PortraitWarwick is not currently getting worked on. Zenonthestoic had some good ideas in the work he did about a year ago and we will definitely pick it back up some day but he’s not currently in flight.
