AURELION SOL STAR FORGER

aurelion-sol-wallpaper

CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE PASSIVE

AurelionSol_PassiveThree stars constantly orbit Aurelion Sol, dealing magic damage and applying spell effects to enemies they strike.

STAR SURGE Q

AurelionSol_QAurelion Sol fires the core of a newborn star in a target direction that explodes—dealing damage and stunning all nearby enemies—upon reactivation or once it travels beyond his stars’ maximum orbital range. Aurelion Sol can travel alongside Starsurge, and by keeping it close he’ll nurture it, growing it in size so that it damages and stuns a wider area when it explodes.

CELESTIAL EXPANSION W

AurelionSol_WAurelion Sol pushes his stars out to his outer ring, significantly increasing their power. Celestial Expansion costs mana to cast and drains mana every second the ability is toggled on. Once he toggles the ability off or runs out of mana, Aurelion Sol pulls his stars back.

COMET OF LEGEND E

AurelionSol_EPassive: Aurelion Sol builds up increasing movement speed as he travels continuously in the same direction, and loses speed on sharp turns. Some of this speed is stored away as Escape Velocity stacks, which are lost entirely whenever he takes damage from an enemy.

Active: Once Aurelion Sol maxes his Escape Velocity stacks, he can activate Comet of Legend to pull in his orbiting stars and take flight, traversing over terrain for a long distance. He cannot turn once his course is set, and enemy damage will bring Aurelion Sol back to earth, restoring his orbiting stars.

VOICE OF LIGHT R

AurelionSol_RAurelion Sol shoots out a long wave of starfire in a target direction that damages and slows all struck enemies. Nearby enemies caught in the blast are also knocked back to Aurelion Sol’s outer ring.

LORE UPDATES Banner

Diana, Leona and Pantheon have all received updated in-client lore entries:

Diana Final Portrait

”I am the light coursing in the soul of the moon.”

Bearing her crescent moonblade, Diana fights as a warrior of the Lunari, a faith all but quashed in the lands around Mount Targon. Clad in shimmering armor the color of winter snow at night, she is a living embodiment of the silver moon’s power. Imbued with the essence of an Aspect from beyond Targon’s towering summit, Diana is no longer wholly human, and struggles to divine herpower and purpose in this world.

Leona Final Portrait

”If you would shine like a sun, first you must burn like one.”

Imbued with the fire of the sun, Leona is a warrior templar of the Solari who defends Mount Targon with her Zenith Blade and Shield of Daybreak. Her skin shimmers with starfire while her eyes burn with the power of the celestial Aspect within her. Armored in gold and bearing a terrible burden of ancient knowledge, Leona brings enlightenment to some, death to others.

Pantheon Final Portrait

”Bring forth one true champion, or a hundred more like you, and then we shall have a battle that will be spoken of until the end of time.”

The peerless warrior known as Pantheon is a nigh-unstoppable paragon of battle. He was born among the Rakkor, a warlike people living on the flanks of Mount Targon, and after climbing the mountain’s treacherous peak and being deemed worthy, he was chosen to become the earthly incarnation of the celestial Aspect of War. Imbued with inhuman power, he relentlessly seeks the enemies of Targon, leaving only corpses in his wake.

Dev Blogs Fiora Flawed Fencer banner

Riot’s latest dev blogs are a behind-the-scenes look at the creative struggles with Fiora’s redesign and a series of GIFs to show what was removed from League in 2015:

Champion Update and the Flawed Fencer

BY RUMTUMTUMMERS

One of our fundamental goals in creating League of Legends champions is ensuring each has a distinct, cohesive, and well-executed identity. In a game with an ever-expanding roster of champs, some are better examples of this than others — especially when you consider some of the older characters inhabiting the Rift. Some champions don’t offer distinct enough gameplay, despite working well within their role. Some champions have fundamental things that feel right, but require a more cohesive package. Others need to be rebuilt from scratch (see: Poppy). Champion Update is the team tasked with sorting out which champions fit where, and figuring out how to update and upgrade as needed to help those champs reach their full potential.

This process isn’t without risks. If Champion Update is committed to the goal of blowing players away and defying their expectations, the occasional strike will always be a possible side effect of swinging for the fences.

FIORA ENTERS THE FRAY Banner

When the ChampUp team looked at Fiora earlier this year, it spotted some major gameplay problems. With no dodgeable spells and immense damage output, a fed Fiora felt like an unfair opponent. If she caught someone, she killed them — end of story. Her tower dives were legendary. But Fiora’s strength hinged heavily on her early-game performance; if she was behind, there wasn’t any real way to come back. Even worse, she lacked utility that could make up for her low damage output, leaving a struggling Fiora no option but to sacrifice herself to the fray in the hopes of at least contributing a bit of useful damage. Fiora was either an unstoppable monster or a liability to her team.

Additionally, ChampUp saw a mismatch in the promise of her character and her actual gameplay, as game designer Stash Chelluck explains. “She was promised to be the Grand Duelist,” says Chelluck, “but her pattern felt very straightforward. It required little thought and reactivity.” And so, ChampUp dove into Fiora’s kit and started making tweaks.

image (53)

Instead of focusing on what could be dialed back or toned down, ChampUp looked for opportunities to more effectively tie her gameplay to her in-game persona. Says Seb Rhee, who lead the ChampUp team during the Fiora re-work, “that’s where Stash discovered the really interesting fencing gameplay — the idea of dueling between two players. Not only would it solve some of her innate gameplay problems, it would make her more cohesive as a character.” The new duel mechanics would help Fiora live up to the image of a talented duelist who can dodge attacks and hit opponents where they’re weakest, along with providing some much-needed utility in the event that she fell behind.

Going big with Fiora’s mechanics posed significant risk. Players who loved her old ult, for example, likely wouldn’t be happy to see it removed. However, ChampUp often has to remove pieces of the original champion in the interest of making him or her better overall (Sion’s original VO, for example). The decisions aren’t easy, but the hope is always that players feel like they’re gaining more than they lose. In the case of Fiora, the team felt as though her new mechanics were a marked upgrade from her old kit, enough that the pain of losing some familiar play patterns would be mitigated.

With the mechanics in place, the team moved into refreshing Fiora’s visuals.

ART OF THE DUEL Banner

New and modified champion mechanics usually need art assets or updates. In the case of Fiora, the team saw a chance to pair gameplay-centric art additions (VFX, ability animations) with a refreshed vision for Fiora’s base appearance. ChampUp concept artist Michael Maurino brings up an increased understanding of League’s universe and factions as inspiration: “We saw an opportunity to dig into the work Foundations was doing with Demacia, to see if there were some aspects we could apply to Fiora from there. We know she’s from Demacia; she should look like it.”

Rhee adds, “The update felt like a second chance to execute on the sort of haughty, condescending character she was originally intended to be.”

image (54)

The art team worked to align Fiora’s costume with that of Demacian nobles, using muted golds, clean white fabrics, and high-quality leathers. The team also used visual cues to emphasize Fiora’s character attributes. Says Maurino, “Fiora is a sharp character; her design is going to have a lot of aggressive points. Her armor comes to a point. Her tunic ends in a point. Anything we can do to drive home what the character represents on first read is a high priority.” From a design perspective, it’s important that players can glance at a character and tell exactly what that character is about.

The art adjustments weren’t limited to costuming. ChampUp also took a knife to Fiora’s features, both on the in-game model and in the new splash art set to accompany her launch. Maurino walks through the thought process of artists working on the update: “We stylized Fiora very intentionally. We decided to give her a much more chiseled face. We wanted to make her sharp—not just in design and costume, but in features. He hair was sharp and her face was much more rigid.” Each change was carefully considered in terms of what it conveyed about Fiora as a character and as an in-game weapon.

It was another big risk — one that wouldn’t play out quite as well as the one the team had taken with her mechanics.

THE SPLASH HEARD ROUND THE WORLD Banner

Initial reactions to Fiora’s updated art were negative, to say the least. Across the League of Legends community, Fiora fans expressed concerns about her new, more angular design. While players were largely in support of her gameplay changes, they rejected her art changes almost unanimously. The outcry was a stark contrast from what the ChampUp team had expected. It seemed as though the team and players had dramatically different visions for Fiora’s identity and how that identity should be represented.

image (56)

Rhee explains that the team went into the reveal with high hopes: “From the team’s perspective, the art changes on Fiora were above and beyond what we needed to make the gameplay work. In the moment, it was like, ‘Wow, we can deliver this incredible cohesiveness on smaller-scope projects — even if they’re not huge Sion-level re-works.’ We came out the other side of the process thinking, ‘This is incredible. We ended up with something so much more than we anticipated this project would ever become.’” Moving from that sense of excitement into immediate damage control, he explains, “felt like running faster than you ever thought you could, then being exhausted at the finish line and realizing you ran the wrong direction.”

The feedback highlighted a disconnect between ChampUp’s understanding of Fiora and the understanding players had developed through their interactions with her. In playing as Fiora, game after game, players gave her an identity of their own invention. Rhee frames it as a natural evolution: “Once a character goes live and players learn that character and use that character (sometimes in ways we don’t anticipate), that character becomes something different from what we built.” In other words, the character matures. Rhee explains that players rejected Fiora’s new art not because of its objective quality, but because “the update failed to honor who Fiora had become for players.” ChampUp focused on her haughtiness and better-than-thou attitude, but players more closely associated her with a young, beautiful swordswoman.

image (57)

This type of feedback, though difficult to hear, is immensely resonant to teams like ChampUp. Players weren’t reacting from a negative space or from an aversion to change, but to something that betrayed their understanding of a character they cared about. Notes Rhee, “It’s not so much that players are loyal to a particular hairstyle, or to Fiora’s cheekbones. They’re loyal to what Fiora represents to them, to the parts of the character that resonate.” Again, players had been asked to give something up — in this case what they gained didn’t feel like more than they lost.

Maurino continues the thought: “Players said, ‘This character would not represent herself this way.’ Not, ‘I don’t like, red, I like blue,’ for example, but, ‘Fiora as a character wouldn’t choose red, she would choose blue.’ When a player says, ‘Fiora’s hair streak, or the way her hair is positioned, does not fulfill what this character is to me,’ that’s completely valid. That’s what happens when a character’s design speaks directly to a player.”

ChampUp worked hard to accommodate player feedback by making changes to Fiora’s new art, softening her features and bringing her hair closer to the original design. But without the bandwidth for another complete overhaul, the team had to settle for a middle-ground. “In the end,” concedes Rhee, “our corrections were more of a compromise. We made a lot of players happier with the changes we made, but ultimately it felt like us and players may have started with different understandings of Fiora.” It’s a lesson the team won’t soon forget.

Updates to Come Banner

For ChampUp, success isn’t measured by the quality standards set by artists or designers. Says Rhee, “Fiora’s update shouldn’t be judged by ‘What did we want to make, and did we make it?’ It’s measured by, ‘How do players feel about this? Do players love this change? We try to surprise and to do things players don’t expect, but that end goal is always present.” The objective quality of art assets or VFX are a lower priority than whether those elements reflect player passion for a given champion. A miss is a miss, regardless of its technical execution.

The Fiora update and the controversy surrounding its art brought plenty of self-examination for the ChampUp team. Champion Update isn’t here to change things for the sake of change, but to improve League of Legends by constantly improving upon the game’s roster of champs. If changes — artistic, mechanical, or otherwise — don’t feel like big gains to players, those changes are missing the mark. The Fiora update served as a lesson on both ends of what can happen when we work to improve the characters players know and love, and a reminder that these improvements aren’t without their potential pitfalls.

Making bold choices and trying to surprise players will never be completely safe. Rhee concludes: “In our effort to really reach, to raise the bar, we’re going to take chances. If we’re taking the level of risks we should be taking as artists, designers, and people who love League, we’re bound to miss the mark sometimes. What’s important is that when we miss, we figure out what went wrong and we move forward with those lessons in tow.”

ONEFORALL MODE RETURNS Banner

One-for-All is back, complete with several new champions and interactions since last time:

L3T4NCY New PortraitHeya ^.^/

It’s been awhile since we saw the original One For All on Summoner’s Rift. A number of new champs have come out since its last run so we thought: why not bring back the OFA funtimes? :D

A bit of trivia for those of you collecting random League knowledge: One For All was the very first featured game mode we ever made (almost 2 years ago this month!) o.O

One For All is a 5v5 battle played on SR where everyone on your team uses the same champion, decided by a vote during champ select. Some champs have amazing synergy with themselves (Kalista? Kalista! :D) so enjoy exploring the possibilities.

There’s been quite a few new champions (and many others reworked) since the last time we did OFA. We’d like some help from you guys specifically testing out the following champions here on PBE before the mode goes live. We’ll be temporarily disabling all other champions in OFA for the first few days on PBE, just to help focus the initial testing on these below champs.

  • Azir
  • Bard
  • Brand
  • Darius
  • Kalista
  • Kassadin
  • Kindred
  • Ekko
  • Fiora
  • Gangplank
  • Garen
  • Gnar
  • Kennen
  • Morde
  • Mundo
  • Rek’Sai
  • Rumble
  • Ryze
  • Skarner
  • Soraka
  • Tahm Kench
  • Tristana
  • Twitch
  • Vi
  • Zilean

To reiterate, when OFA goes live, ALL champions will be available to play. We’re just limiting the pool here on PBE to help focus testing on the newer script-worked champs.

Thanks guys. Now to try out that matryoshka Tahm Kench. :D

CLARITY ON POPPYS FUTURE UPDATE Banner

Will Poppys ultimate remain the same after the rework

Scruffy Final PortraitHer old ultimate is not staying sorry to say. There is something to be said for how unique it is but the amount of frustration/confusion/abusive edge cases that it adds to the game outweighs the amount of fun/interesting gameplay that it brings.

Hopefully the new ult we have in the works will be much more exciting and interesting while not bringing with it so many negative costs. Wait and see just a short while longer and let us know what you think of it when it’s done.

Thematically will Poppy still be a tenacious yordle ball of hate

Meddler Final PortraitWe’re aiming to preserve her personality – determined, heroic, sincere etc.

Must admit ‘ball of hate’ isn’t the vibe I get off Poppy at present, ‘ball of stubborness’, ‘ball of determination’, ‘ball of smash’ and so on being the sort of stuff I associate with Poppy. Curious as to other people’s thoughts though as to which few words you’d use to sum up Poppy’s personality overall?

What parts of Poppys old kit will be preserved in her update

Scruffy Final PortraitWe’re keeping a few other things from her current kit (E being a big one, also her “low health tankiness”).

Poppys current passive makes her immune to burst Will that change

Meddler Final PortraitWe’ll be replacing Poppy’s passive. We are thinking about keeping a ittle bit of ‘tough when low on health’ on the kit though, just in a much more apparent and balanceable way.

DISCUSSION ON TALONS PASSIVE Banner

Whatre your thoughts on Talons passive

Scruffy Final PortraitNot Repertoir but I agree that Talon’s passive is pretty lackluster in both satisfaction and just how interesting it is compared to some of the stuff we can do now.

No plans for just a passive rework on him though as he is probably a champ that we would want to take on all at once. Build some more unique identity into the character, fix some of his one dimensional play, and create more clear opportunities for him outskilling his opponent and vice versa.

[ Link to Post ]

What happened to Hephestopheless ideas to rework Talons passive

Meddler Final PortraitGiving Talon a reason to auto attack a bit more’s a solid goal for a passive on him. Very with you that it’s not accomplishing that at present though, it’s not core enough to his play pattern in terms of its contribution, his own ability to set it up or his capability to auto attack for an extended period.

As a side note Hephestopheles does indeed still work at Riot. Original developer intent’s something we like to refer to since it can offer useful insights into how to improve a champion and we’ll certainly tap Hephestopheles for his thoughts when doing work on Talon at some point. Working on a champion puts you in a great position to help maintain and develop them after they go out, it doesn’t mean you continue to control everything about them based off your personal preferences though. Doing what’s right for the character/game is the most important thing and means that if we grab Hephestopheles to chat about changing Talon his response is almost certainly going to be something along the lines of ‘awesome, how can we make him better?’.

FURTHER WORK ON MISS FORTUNE Banner

Do youve any further plans to update Miss Fortune

Repertoir New PortraitYes. Statikk’s on it, but we don’t have anything ready to talk about just yet.

[ Link to Post ]

So you guys are looking to improve her give her some buffs

Repertoir New PortraitReally want to focus on hitting her identity as some kind of run-and-gun aoe marksman as far as I know, but that’s about all I know for now.

[ Link to Post ]

Neither you nor Statikk play Miss Fortune so why are you reworking her

Repertoir New PortraitThat’s a pretty unfair and short-sighted assessment.

I’m not an MF main, and neither is Statikk. You’re right about that, but that’s really of much less value than you’re making it out to be. People seem to think that Ashe and Sion were pretty successful updates in the recent past, and I can assure you that I was not an Ashe main and Scruffy was not a Sion main going into those projects.

Also, as designers, we participate in two full internal games every day amongst each other to test changes out and see where we want to take things. Additionally, we have an excellent playtest team full of Diamond, Masters, and Challenger players that play League pretty much nonstop and give us their opinions. Riot Umpunct, in particular, mained MF on his way to Masters this season.

For what it’s worth, Ezreal is literally the lead designer on my team.

I understand you may have concerns over your champion not getting its fair treatment, but please don’t turn things into a series of accusations against us for trying to share and get the champions into a good spot. Spewing insults at me and other Rioters does literally no good, and all it does is discourage us from trying to keep you guys in the loop and take your feedback into account.

Miss Fortunes ult should deal way more damage than it currently does

Repertoir New PortraitWhen we first started talking about MF and what we might want to do for her, we had all these ideas, and Scruffy stepped in and just said “Guys, seriously, just double her ult’s damage and go from there.”

Now, Statikk didn’t do exactly that, but it at least gives an idea of where our heads are at with her.

STATE OF JUGGERNAUTS POST 516 AND FUTURE UPDATES Banner

What do you think will happen to Nasus after Patch 5 16

Scruffy Final PortraitI agree that he’s in a pretty balanced spot right now. After 5.16, it’s not super clear how that will change (new items and a bunch of reworks could shake things up a lot). My guess is it’ll be about even with frozen heart nerf (hurts nasus) and Steraks Gage (+ base AD good for nasus/sheen users).

That said, the live balance team, the systems team, and the champ update team are all watching the results very closely so we can follow up where it’s needed.

[ Link to Post ]

Do you think 5 16 s Armor item nerfs can hit Fighters harder than intended

Scruffy Final PortraitAbsolutely, I think that there is no crusade against tanks/fighters that i’ve heard of and the general fear is that they will end up too strong after 5.16. If in the end things go the other way and defensive characters get pushed down into a bad space, we will adjust things asap.

[ Link to Post ]

Nasus has no incentive to build Health and his staple items are getting nerfed

Scruffy Final PortraitYea, the main issue as you say for nasus is that health items really don’t fit as well into his ideal builds. If he needs some tweaks after 5.16 giving him better ways to scale off health may be a way to keep him relevant in the new HP heavy item world.

How far off are the Shyvana and Olaf reworks

Repertoir New PortraitEnd of year maybe? We know that we want to work on them, but we don’t yet know exactlywhat the output should be per champion yet.

[ Link to Post ]

Are there any plans for Galio Aatrox and Tryndamere

Repertoir New PortraitAatrox is probably closest to a Juggernaut here, but even then, his mobility profile (free target dash, specifically) is pretty contradictory to our expectation for these guys, so working on him would probably come at costs to that or something else that players see as important to his identity. That said, Gypsylord was recently looking into giving Aatrox some love unrelated to ‘juggernaut’ work, so he may be ready to shed some light on that in the coming months.

Are there any more Juggernauts in the works that arent Shyvana or Olaf

Repertoir New PortraitNo.

Will you continue to work on Morde if hes not viable after Patch 5 16

Meddler Final PortraitWe’ve put time aside for follow up work on all four juggernauts, and the new items, during both 5.17 and 5.18’s development in case it’s needed. Morde’s definitely the highest risk project of the four, both in terms of scope of changes and change in playstyle, so it seems a reasonable assumption he might need more follow up attention than average.

We’ll make sure to give you folks some visibility into how we think each of those reworks is going post launch and what we are or aren’t planning to change in response to that. One thing we do want to watch out for though is reacting too quickly to day one performance. With any rework a lot of people that aren’t familiar with a champ, or haven’t played them for a long time, give them a try to see what they’re like now. That temporarily pulls a champ’s performance down a lot briefly, as the need to learn new mechanics even for more experienced players. Day 1 win rates noticeably below a champ’s previous win rate are basically expected as a result, though there’s certainly a limit to how much lower they should be (Fiora for example’s just too weak at present, in addition to going through that learning curve/new player period).

QUINN UPDATES CURRENTLY BEING WORKED ON Banner

Do youve any plans to update Quinn

Repertoir New PortraitI am actually actively doing some work on Quinn. One of the things I want to address is that Harrier just seems like it screws me over when playing her sometimes. We’re supposed to be a dynamic duo. Please mark more useful targets, Valor. Please stop taking your time to mark things, Valor. And Quinn, maybe people would take your attacks seriously if they felt like they were aiming to injure someone.

That’s my general attitude on Quinn, anyway.

We’re not at the point yet where I can discuss full details, but they’re high up on my personal radar.

[ Link to Post ]

Is Quinns toplane kit preventing her from being played as an ADC

Repertoir New PortraitQuinn is a bit of an oddball, in that identifying what lane she belongs in isn’t an easy task. However, being an adc and being played in a solo lane are not necessarily mutually exclusive, as we have seen from some other guys like Ezreal, Varus, and occasionally Corki being played in solo lanes.

If the meta were ever to shift away from marksman in a duo lane, Quinn’s value would probably be a lot higher, but that hasn’t been the case for quite a long time, so it’s hard to say with certainty if that’s ever going to come back.

It would probably be the safest thing for us to figure out what is unique and/or cool about Quinn and see how we can amplify that and make it something useful that teams care about having. If we could make “ranged carry that becomes melee carry” provide a different output that you wouldn’t just get from another melee carry, then that would probably serve the character well. If we couldn’t, we’d probably have to look to other facets of Quinn to emphasize as her cool and uniquely powerful thing(s).

STATE OF VEIGAR AND UPDATE ON TARICS REWORK Banner

Hopefully Tarics update will include the Charm mechanic you talked about before

IronStylus Final PortraitTrying to. It’s an interesting balance, and one not without its inherent dangers. A lot of people have attachment to Taric for various reasons. Since he’s such an old asset, there’s more space for individuals to project their fantasy onto him.

Expectation is different in everyone’s eyes, even internally. I and other artists have been working on him for a while also. We’ve gone through LOTS of iterations and are still probably a little ways out from settling on something solid. We have some cool ideas for just what is “gem magic”, how it manifests, and what makes Taric Taric. It’s been a journey, that’s for sure.

Right now we’re hoping to have his concept locked later this month, or sometime next month. Not sure at all about release, since we’ve got some other large projects in the pipeline now we might not hit the end of the year for him, but here’s hoping!

[ Link to Post ]

Are you content with leaving Veigar in his current state

Scruffy Final PortraitVeigar wasn’t a champion update (the team I work on) but I know that the live gameplay designers did not intend to nerf him from the onset. It may be time for some tweaks for him if he’s not viable so I’ll run it by them and see if there is any room for a buff.

If he’s already strong there may be other ways to improve his QoL without buffing him. Will investigate, no promises.

Upcoming change to patch day for OCE

Agent Mindstar:  TL:DR Starting with patch 5.16, Oceania will be the first region in the world to receive future patches. Our patch day will now be Wednesday mornings instead of Thursday mornings.

Hey everyone,

I want to share an upcoming change to Oceania’s patch timing. Starting with the next patch, Oceania will be moving up from Thursdays to Wednesdays. We’re also taking the opportunity to shift downtime a bit to better match when most of you are offline. (Neat side-note: this means Oceania will be the first region in the world to receive future patches)

We’ll provide more timing updates as we get closer to enacting this change.

If you have any questions about this let us know in the comments below!
