An Update on Chromas

Hey everyone,

SuperCakes here. I’m the product manager on Personalization (aka Skins Team).

It’s been a little over a year since we launched chroma packs. And while we’ve always been excited about chromas as a product, after hearing from you, we realized we could make them better. Now we’re hyped to share some news with you about our changes to chromas which are coming out soon and are tracking to hit PBE next week.

Our first move was to go back to basics and revisit things from this perspective: Why would I, as a player, want chromas?

Here’s the thing. I love skins and have a lot of them. But there are certain skins I always go back to. Arcade Miss Fortune is one of my favorite skins, and looking at what you guys are playing, it’s one of your favorites, too. And if I can play her in a rainbow of options, that sounds pretty cool to me. Chromas are meant to deepen your experience with a piece of content you already own, love, and play the shit out of. It’s that simple.

Next step, How do we address your feedback? The things that were ringing loudest were around bundling, aesthetics, and the pricing of chromas, and that’s where we put the majority of our focus.

Bundling:

We’ve unpacked chromas so you can buy them individually. You can still buy them in bundles, though, for a discount.

Aesthetics:

Chromas are designed by the same folks that make skins, and we take our responsibility pretty seriously. We only want to introduce things into the game that improve the overall experience of playing League of Legends. We took a look at what we were making and found opportunities to improve with revamped color schemes, patterns, and textures.

Pricing:

Chromas will be priced at 290 RP each, and will also be available in discounted bundles for the collectors out there. For those of you who love a chance to spend IP, we’re alsointroducing recurring IP sales which will take place twice a year. The first IP sale goes from August 25, 2016 to September 8, 2016 and includes all chromas launched before August 2016.

Some of you also suggested that chromas could be a reward for mastery. We’re committed to improving mastery rewards, and with the release of Hextech Crafting this year, we’re thrilled to have a way to reward you for mastery across several of our content offerings, including a chance to get free skins. We won’t be launching chromas in Hextech Crafting at this time, but it’s something we’re thinking about for future iterations.

We’ll get into more detail when the first wave of new chromas launches in a few weeks. For now, here’s a sneak peek of some of the aesthetic changes mentioned:

Just some bugfixes for minions and their wacky behavior.

The only one that’s worth calling out is the last one on the list – this was actually implemented in 5.22, and primarily helps melee vs ranged matchups with respect to basic attacks. Simply put, the ‘call for help’ used to be around yourself and not the enemy, meaning that when they’d harass you off the wave, your minions would often ‘pretend’ not to notice as they went about their business. Now minions are more courageous and will actively watch for enemy harassment.

Minions no longer freeze or awkwardly lock eyes with other minions

Minions now display how much bonus damage or damage reduction they have from the pushing changes implemented in 5.23

Minions no longer acquire new targets that are in the river or jungle, and if they enter the river or jungle they’ll refuse to acquire any target until they leave. (Implemented in 5.22 but undocumented)

Now additionally calls for help in a ring around your opponent when attacked near minions (implemented in 5.22 but undocumented).

 

 

NEW CHAMPION SELECT Banner

The New Champion Select is almost ready for live. It will follow a staggered release, with public testing for NA and TR beginning on January 13th. Below you can find a rundown of how the new system will work:

Before you queue, you’ll be asked to pick your Primary and Secondary role. Logically, your Primary role takes priority in the matchmaking:

The queue interface is standard fair. The wait time is displayed at the bottom, rather than the top of the client and there are new visuals for the ticking time confirmation:

Inside the Champion Select, you’ll be placed on a 3D map of Summoner’s Rift, with an arrow-type indicator for your role:

I was Captain here, so I couldn’t ban. Instead, I could give a visual cue to teammates of what I wanted to play. This phase is a suggestive “I want to play this, please don’t ban it” type – if my teammates wanted to, they could’ve banned Yasuo, but I’ve shown them I want to play that Champion.

There’s a neat animation for bans, where the banned Champion’s portrait will disintegrate into shards. Here’s how it looks like for both allied bans and enemy bans:

Once banning is complete, picking resumes as is currently on live. The Champions picked (or hovered over) will be displayed in a circular shape. Once selected, they will play their Champ Select quote for everyone:

Turrets have unreliable targetting and deal way too little damage

Koalifier Final PortraitCaveat: I don’t design anything at all, I just like playing League of Legends.

Turret targeting is something that might be a point of improvement, but what would that look like? Clearly turrets should not prioritize champions, or pushing lanes becomes extremely difficult. I’m not a fan of the %hp idea, because it makes tanks less relevant, and they already struggle as a class with shifts in the meta.

What are some examples of how turret aggro should work better? Here’s my assumptions:

The tower shouldn’t switch targets if it’s already hitting a champ. The tower should prioritize champions only when there are no minions/pets, and only when they deal damage to friendly champions.

Tower aggro rules should be easy to understand and consistent. (e.g. doing damage to an enemy vs. hitting an enemy with non-damaging cc – either damage should trigger aggro, or any ability/damage should trigger aggro. Imo we should maintain the current functionality).Tower attack rate should be consistent (no tower autoattack reset on champ aggro).

Shouldnt turrets be able to deal with the frontline in case of a dive

Koalifier Final PortraitI think I just fundamentally disagree that towers should be able to take on mega-tanks. If they supplement your team’s damage and do around 10-15% of a tank’s HP in 5-6 seconds, that seems reasonable. Any change to towers that makes them threatening to tanks during all stages of the game either:

A. Makes building tank stats completely ineffective against towers (%hp true damage, massive armor pen) and results in tanks being significantly less useful and feeling like crap; or
B. Makes towers massively fuck up squishy champions, punishing minor mistakes really heavily (increased overall damage).

I don’t think either A or B encourages interesting gameplay; it just helps teams with strong waveclear turtle under towers and drag out games, which isn’t super fun imo.

If there’s anything that’s really coalescing for me in this thread, it’s that towers resetting while you are still in the middle of getting dived feels pretty bad. Like I’ve sad a bunch of times, I don’t work on this stuff, but I’ll chat with some folks about this thread and see what they think. I can’t promise that we’ll make a change along those lines as I don’t fully understand the design principles behind towers, but I’ll follow up on it 😀

I think the Dragon aggro thing made sense because of aggro juggling being borderline exploitative, and because Dragon actually moves. Turrets gaining range sounds really annoying.

They’re both unstoppable during the ult, they’re not CC immune though, so can be CC’d and, if the duration’s long enough, will still be CC’d after the ult ends. Ryze snare or Veigar stun for example won’t stop them from completing their ults, but can limit them after they end if applied mid dash.

Meddler Final PortraitWe’ve been talking about possible Tahm nerfs in 6.2 or 6.3, those aren’t certain yet though (want to make sure we’re nerfing the correct thing(s), want to investigate whether we should be buffing something like his ult’s useability at the same time).

Even if we do nerf him though I’d still expect him to be a pretty difficult match up for Vi. A lot of her power is in her ability to close distance reliably to get onto the target of her choice. That’s not very useful against Tahm direct, given you’re not going to be bursting down a tank, assuming similar XP/gold, and he’s absolutely fine with people putting themselves in his face.

A base damage nerf and AP ratio buff would certainly change AP MF’s power curve, keeping that build generally power neutral overall should be doable though if we conclude that’s appropriate here.

Smurfing is unfair and ruins the experience for lowerlevel players

I didn’t start playing until pretty much everyone and their super-cool grandmothers all had smurfs that queued up at the same time as I would. It was really confusing and frustrating that so many of my fellow lvl 6 ‘noobs’ could be so much better than I. It can be a pretty sucky experience in the game sometimes.

It’d be neat to do a study on smurfs — I wonder if I could have a chat with a few people around the office to see what we could learn about ’em. Noooo guarantees of course, but it’s definitely a topic I’d be interested in helping out with the research.

I appreciate being able to lurk these boards, particularly in ‘Player Behavior & Moderation,’ even if I definitely don’t get to read everything, and I don’t always comment on things I do get around to reading. Since I’m a gamer too, player pain is a very real thing to me, so these matters are of a particular interest to me and I’d love to be able to make an impact whenever possible.

Will future Champion reworks be accompanied by new lore for them

Repertoir New PortraitI can’t speak to much on the past on this one, since I haven’t worked on my full reboots of champions, but moving forward, I think it’s pretty safe to say that on big projects like Taric, Poppy, etc., you can expect new or updated lore, and you can probably not expect new lore on smaller stuff.

For Taric specifically, I’m not the writer of the lore, but I am one of the people that’s trying to help give feedback to the writer. I don’t think there should be a bunch of characters’ lore being reduced in the near future, and we haven’t written the final lore yet for Taric, but I’d expect it to be closer to 3 paragraphs than 3 sentences.

The fact that it can fail makes it really awesome when it works, and provides some really cool tension in a lot of cases. Another thing to consider is that the power budget that would have to go into her passive would be much higher if it was much more resilient, and that would have to come from somewhere, as she’s not a low performer as far as her balance state goes.

Is the balance team shying away from making kits that scale with Armor

Repertoir New PortraitAnswering this question since it’s one I’ve seen less of, and I think the others have mostly been answered.

Generally speaking, we should avoid making either Armor or Magic Resist supremely more powerful on champions when compared to the other stat, unless it is a very specific intended strength/weakness. Taric falls into this category, where being an exceptionally good pick against physical damage teams is very much an intended strength. I intend on maintaining some of that in his upcoming update.

Why does the balance team rarely if ever revert nerfs

Repertoir New PortraitAs far as why we tend to not to strict reverts, I don’t think there’s any one rule for/against it that I know of. That said, we try to make changes that are directionally sound for champions/items/masteries when we make them, so that even if other factors that contribute to their balance change, we’re happy with the decision in the long run. Sejuani and Cinderhulk is a pretty common case people talk about here, but at no point do I think either of them was really unacceptably weak, and I think there are similar things going on with Swain and DFT right now.

Also, I do think that it’s easy for players to feel like their champion has been overnerfed. I’ve historically felt this way about champions I played as well. If you imagine all the various power levels that champions could fall at as a spectrum, it seems reasonable to say there’s a segment of that spectrum that could be considered allowable power levels. As someone who has felt this way in the past about certain champions, I think it’s easy for players to be biased into thinking certain champions power should rest at the upper end of that allowable part, while at the same time being perfectly comfortable with other champions they are less attached to resting at the middle or lower end.

Currently Caitlyn is under performing as a longrange marksman

I’m a HUGE Caitlyn player also. She was the first champion I ever really took seriously and wanted to ‘main’. I’m also one of the people that worked on the Champion Update team helping mold Caitlyn into what she is right now.

 

With that being said, I do feel that Caitlyn changed a bit of her early game power to her late game power. I max Q first then go to E. I do love the traps but I find more reliable damage with the other two. I also get Warlord’s in the mastery tree because I feel that I am banking for that late game fight more than just doing the early game trade. This changes who I want to support for me.

Another thing I’m finding hard is that Caitlyn has a hard time securing kills in a team fight. She tends to hope that an auto kills them and doesn’t really have the ability to take them.

I was hoping you’d be able to tell me what masteries, runes and ability order you are going. I’d like to talk about this more, see how you feel more compared to certain match-ups. I think she should lose early to MF and Lucian. They have early game steroids and ultimates that can be used effectively mid trade compared to Caitlyn where you are charging something.

The New Champion Select is almost ready for live. It will follow a staggered release, with public testing for NA and TR beginning on January 13th. Below you can find a rundown of how the new system will work:

Before you queue, you’ll be asked to pick your Primary and Secondary role. Logically, your Primary role takes priority in the matchmaking:

The queue interface is standard fair. The wait time is displayed at the bottom, rather than the top of the client and there are new visuals for the ticking time confirmation:

Inside the Champion Select, you’ll be placed on a 3D map of Summoner’s Rift, with an arrow-type indicator for your role:

I was Captain here, so I couldn’t ban. Instead, I could give a visual cue to teammates of what I wanted to play. This phase is a suggestive “I want to play this, please don’t ban it” type – if my teammates wanted to, they could’ve banned Yasuo, but I’ve shown them I want to play that Champion.

There’s a neat animation for bans, where the banned Champion’s portrait will disintegrate into shards. Here’s how it looks like for both allied bans and enemy bans:

Once banning is complete, picking resumes as is currently on live. The Champions picked (or hovered over) will be displayed in a circular shape. Once selected, they will play their Champ Select quote for everyone:

  • 2D map with Roles and Champions picked on the bottom right;

[ New Mechanic ] Special Delivery: Every 5 minutes, Corki receives a special set of bombs on the spawn platform. When he picks up the package, he receives a 40% bonus to his total Movement Speed.

The bombs allow Corki to cast an improved Valkyrie. This mega W has 1800 range, knocks enemies aside when it hits them, slows for 90% and leaves a burning trail that deals 60/90/120/150/180 (+0.2 AD) (+0.2 AP) magic damage per second. The dash speed is 1500 in-game units per second.

Corki’s normal Valkyrie is put on a 0 second cooldown after he casts the mega W.

Graves’ shotgun has some unique properties –

 

  • Double Barrel: Graves must reload when he runs out of ammo. Attack speed reduces reload time only slightly, but reduces time between attacks dramatically.
  • 12-Gauge: Attacks fire 4 bullets (8 on critical strikes.) Units hit take 75% Attack Damage + 25% for additional bullets. Basic auto attacks deal 25% decreased damage to structures.
  • Buckshot: Bullets cannot pass through units. Non-champions struck by multiple bullets are knocked back.

Here’s the crit from Graves’ shotgun. Note that he fires an extra 4 pellets, each of which deal 25% of the original’s damage for a total of 100%, same as a regular crit.

Basic attack hits lower the cooldown of Quickdraw by 0.5 seconds and, against non-minions, also refresh True Grit. Note that Quickdraw resets Graves’ auto-attack timer and each shotgun pellet individually reduces the cooldown of Quickdraw.

True Grit grants 10/15/20/25/30 Armor and Magic Resist per stack, with a cap of 4 stacks at all levels..

  • Location/timing:
    • Spawns at the Baron Pit
    • First appears at 4:00
    • Respawns every 5 minutes
    • Despawns at 19:45 unless in combat; hard despawns at 19:55 no matter what
  • Encounter details:
    • Melee-only attacker – but hits pretty hard. Need to be able to take a punch to tank RH.
    • The Eye will occasionally open, exposing RH to bonus damage on attacks from behind equal to 15% of RH’s Max HP as True Damage.
    • Takes 35% less damage from ranged Autoattacks.

5-point Masteries don’t have to be filled to the end; you can split the 5 points between the two and that will unlock the next tier. Note that you can’t spend more than 5 points between the two Masteries.

 

The last row is for Keystone Masteries. Again, you can only pick one of the three.

ADJUSTMENTS TO KILL BOUNTIES Banner

Here’s the relevant information on what changes are coming to Kill Bounties, taken from Xypherous‘ post which you can find HERE.

 

Bounty Rules

Champions now begin to accrue a Bounty once they have gotten 2 consecutive kills without dying, like live – and will set you to Bounty Tier ‘2’ (like live.)

The more kills you get, the higher your bounty ‘Tier’, up to a maximum of Bounty ‘Tier’ 5 – which is the same as live.

Major Changes

Bounty ‘Tier’ are now visualized next to your champion health bar. Higher ‘Tiers’ of Bounties will have progressively more impressive icons. You will be able to see both the Bounty Tier of allies and enemy champions.

Dying no longer resets your Bounty entirely. Instead, it decays your Bounty ‘Tier’ by 3 ‘Tier’. If you have a Bounty ‘Tier’ of 3 or less, this means it will reset completely. If you have a Bounty Tier of 4 or 5 – you will go to 1 and 2 respectively.

Bounties now give Team gold rather than adding to kill gold. Killing a champion with a Bounty will display the total amount of Team Gold awarded to the enemy.

ASSIST ‘STREAKS’ REMOVED Gold bonuses from having multiple assists without killing a champion have been removed entirely. The majority of this gold has been moved to either starting Tier 1 support items, ambient gold or floated to more global gold from objectives and champions.
