Welcome to Patch 5.15, the small one where we sit back and let the game catch its breath for a sec. What with all the updates recently to jungle items, game balance and burning tides (thanks, Miss Fortune), we figured it best to enjoy a lighter patch where we focus on some pro-play outliers and watch the ever-evolving metagame take shape. So kick your feet up, this one’s on the house.

Diving a level deeper, we do have some sizable changes for Teemo to give him more control of his destiny in fights rather than setting up minefields and hoping folks’d walk into it. If you’re someone that wishes we’d delete him instead, we suggest you try out Fiora, who’s got a set of updated Demacian duds and slick new moves to help you take out the furry little monster in style. Random aside: did you know Teemo’s last buff was 3 years ago? We thought you’d like some trivia dressing with your foreword-salad. We’ve never really thought of the foreword as food before, but salads are healthy (and so is context).

If she manages to attack her enemy’s weak spot, Fiora deals 3 [+0.27-0.45 AD]% of the target’s maximum Health as bonus true damage for that attack, receives a 20% [30/40/50% with ranks in R] bonus Movement Speed and restores 20 [+6 per level] Health. Fiora reveals a new weak spot whenever she attacks one, or when a moderate period of time passes without it being attacked.

Fiora lunges in a target direction before striking a nearby enemy, dealing 65/75/85/95/105 [+0.55/0.7/0.85/1.0/1.15 bonus AD] physical damage and applying on-hit effects. Lunge prioritizes enemy champions, and tries to hit enemy weak spots. Finally, 60% of Lunge’s cooldown is refreshed when the ability strikes an enemy.

Riposte Final IconCost: 50 mana at all ranks || Cooldown: X seconds || Range: 750

Fiora enters a defensive stance, parrying all damage and hard crowd control abilities for a fraction of a second. After she’s done parrying, Fiora attacks in a target direction, dealing 90/130/170/210/250 [+0.6 AP] magic damage and slowing the movespeed and Attack  Speed of the first Champion she hits by 50% for 1.5 seconds. If she parries any hard crowd control abilities, Riposte stuns instead of slows.

Fiora gains 50% increased attack speed on her next two basic attacks. The first cannot crit but slows her target by 40/45/50/55/60% for 1 second, while the second is guaranteed to crit for 140/155/170/185/200% damage.

Grand Challenge Final IconCost: 100 mana at all ranks || Cooldown: 110/90/70 seconds || Range: 500

Fiora targets an enemy champion, gaining speed and full knowledge of their vitals. Each time she destroys a weak spot, she deals damage equal to a maximum of 4 times the true damage from her passive [15% of Max HP]. If she’s able to destroy all four weak spots in 8 seconds, or if she destroys at least one before her target dies, Fiora creates a large and long-lasting zone under her enemy that heals Fiora and her allied champions for 80/110/140 [+0.6 AD] each second for 5 seconds.

To complement her gameplay & visual rework, Fiora’s received a new short client entry:

NEW MODEL FOR GANGPLANK

Gangplank’s default model has been updated to reflect the events of the Bilgewater Tides storyline. You can get his older looks with the Captain Gangplank skin, which will be free to all players who finish a matchmade game with Gangplank by August 10th (otherwise it will cost 975 RP).

One of Bilgewater’s most infamous bounty hunters, she built her legend upon a swathe of bullet-riddled corpses and captured ne’er-do-wells. The booming echoes of her twin pistols in the port city’s reeking wharfs and scavenger shanties are sure signs of another warrant from the Bounty Board being settled.

TWEAKS TO NEW HUD

Here’s the official list of upcoming changes to the new HUD:

Readability

  • New font and styling
  • Larger team frames, meters, and ult timers
  • Full square cooldown indicator
  • New colors differentiating “on cooldown” and “out of mana”
  • Larger stat icons and text
  • Larger Ping and FPS displays
  • Scoreboard now has more padding, larger champ portraits, and larger fonts
  • Added drop shadow to chat
  • Brighter XP bar
  • Larger Summoner spell timers on the scoreboard
  • Active ability events have been changed to gold (level up, toggle, just off cd) to differentiate from unavailable (cooldown, OoM)

Animation and Audio

  • Shortened and pulled back on many animations including “level up”, “just off cooldown”, and toggles
  • Scaled back many audio cues

Layout

  • CS, KDA, and Team KDA has rejoined game time in the top right
  • Scoreboard improvements including larger and clearer summoner spell and respawn timers

Misc

  • Added colored bonus stats
  • Added cast bars for all abilities other than instant casts
  • Swapped Crit and Attack Range in player stats
  • Mute buttons on the Scoreboard are now always visible
  • Minimap can now be scaled smaller

 

The KDA score and minion kills are once again displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Also, stats that’re affected by runes, items, masteries, etc., are now listed with a yellow color with in the Champion Stats [C] box.

INSTANT FEEDBACK SYSTEM

As mentioned at launch, the Instant Feedback System was originally tuned conservatively to avoid false positives. Now that it’s been in place for a few months we’re ready to start taking the training wheels off. In particular, the system is now more likely to punish hate speech after just one incidence.

 


CHAMPION MASTERY EMOTE

When Champion Mastery launched a while back, we decided we’d wait and see how the rank 4 and 5 emotes were being used before making them visible to the enemy team. Fast forward a few months and, after adding in a light safeguard to ensure players can opt out of emote spam, we’re ready to let you show your achievements off to everyone in your matches!

[ YOU CAN’T IGNORE MY BADGE ] The rank 4 and 5 Champion Mastery emotes are now visible to the enemy team

[ WAIT YES YOU CAN ] Muting a player now hides their Champion Mastery emote (both ally and enemy)
 


Bugfixes

 

  • (Black Market Brawlers) Enchantment: Teleport‘s active effect can no longer be bugged to cast without a cooldown
  • Rift Scuttler now drops a soul
  • Upgrading a trinket no longer resets its cooldown (This was fixed in 5.14 but we forgot to document it. Sorry!)
  • Using a consumable item no longer temporarily disables Devourer’s effects
  • Galio now properly gets assists when shielding allies with W – Bulwark
  • Spirit Guard Udyr now plays VO when he kills a Rift Scuttler
  • Restored custom E – Shunpo VFX for Sandstorm and Slay Belle Katarina

A new poro has wandered on the PBE, holding what’s presumably a tablet pen. It’ll likely be a reward for the recent art event on Riot Korea’s official page.

TWEAKS TO NEW HUD

Here’s the official list of upcoming changes to the new HUD:

Readability

  • New font and styling
  • Larger team frames, meters, and ult timers
  • Full square cooldown indicator
  • New colors differentiating “on cooldown” and “out of mana”
  • Larger stat icons and text
  • Larger Ping and FPS displays
  • Scoreboard now has more padding, larger champ portraits, and larger fonts
  • Added drop shadow to chat
  • Brighter XP bar
  • Larger Summoner spell timers on the scoreboard
  • Active ability events have been changed to gold (level up, toggle, just off cd) to differentiate from unavailable (cooldown, OoM)

Animation and Audio

  • Shortened and pulled back on many animations including “level up”, “just off cooldown”, and toggles
  • Scaled back many audio cues

Layout

  • CS, KDA, and Team KDA has rejoined game time in the top right
  • Scoreboard improvements including larger and clearer summoner spell and respawn timers

Misc

  • Added colored bonus stats
  • Added cast bars for all abilities other than instant casts
  • Swapped Crit and Attack Range in player stats
  • Mute buttons on the Scoreboard are now always visible
  • Minimap can now be scaled smaller

 

The KDA score and minion kills are once again displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Also, stats that’re affected by runes, items, masteries, etc., are now listed with a yellow color with in the Champion Stats [C] box.

Summary

Patch 4.17’s forecast is here, detailing a shift in Nidalee‘s balance from AD lane bully to an AP bruiser, possible nerfs to Kha’Zix‘s W, minor buffs to LeBlanc and Rammus, nerfs to Tristana‘s early and mid game and the recent PBE reworks of Viktor and Soraka. Also, all 111 Champions released before 2013 and their skins will be color-fixed to match the visuals of the new Summoner’s Rift. This doesn’t mean particle changes or texture updates, just a rebalancing of the colors.

Live Gameplay: Saludos Invocadores!

Spinning these Patch Forecasts back up as more changes come hurtling to the PBE. In the future we’ll be experimenting with the forecast to see what’s the best way to communicate pre-PBE changes, but for now we’ve got some neat things on the way that we wanted to talk about.

The overarching narrative for this patch is to reduce stagnation in the live environment by targeting highly banned champions and (finally) looking at those champs who make for a low-counterplay game (looking at you Talon). Speaking to the latter (low counter play dudes), it’s worth mentioning they’ve always had low counterplay, but that we’ve traditionally let them be due to their low visibility and (occasionally) lack of current-meta strengths. More below!

There’s also the GLORIOUS EVOLUTION of Viktor with his gameplay update (PBE friends, check that feedback thread) and the still-glorious-but-not-named-glorious evolution of Soraka with a larger gameplay update of her own (PBE friends, once again).

So some forecasting:

There are a few oppressive champions out there who have been climbing the ladders in terms of ban rates, play rates, and win rates, and we’ve finally decided to get into the weeds to make them a bit healthier to play against. Between 4.17 and 4.18 you can expect some small changes to champs like Akali, Talon, Yasuo, and Fiora (oh man Fiora), with most focused on reducing some in their low-counterplay abilities (maybe not eliminating, but reducing at the very least).

Speaking of strong dudes, there’s a few more on our radar that we wanted to address specifically:

 

Nidalee Final Portrait

Cat lady’s doing pretty well in all levels of play, specifically when she’s thrown into top lane as a low counterplay bruiser-bully. We’re looking for ways to reduce some of Nidalee’s high AD / auto-attack focused strengths while maybe giving some love back to her AP bruiser / AP burst builds.

 

Tristana Final Portrait

Don’t really need to say much beyond this, but Trist’s pretty good right now. Specifically her early / mid-game tradeoffs just aren’t being made when she’s got such a monster lategame potential. We’re looking for ways to fix this, specifically by adding windows to actually beat her up throughout the game.

 

Kha'Zix Final Portrait

As an opportunistic assassin, Kha’Zix’s gone back to his missile-bugging days of prioritizing W to poke away at people. Given W’s got tons of utility already piled on top of it (slow, vision, aoe), we’re a little concerned that as missile-bug picks up, Kha’Zix will go back to losing a lot of his counterplay, especially since he can poke for high damage on grouped up individuals. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Kha’Zix as our changes develop, but if he needs help assassinating people, we’re prepared to give him some love in those areas!

 

Rammus Final Portrait

Not really a nerf or a huge buff, but just in case anyone mining PBE files gets confused, we’re making it so that Powerball and Defensive Ball Curl can now overlap by 1 second, so if you use one to cancel the other you get 1 second to consider your mistake before it actually happens.

 

LeBlanc Final Portrait

LeBlanc changes! Since we removed the silence from her sigil of… malice, LeBlanc hasn’t been in the best of places. We’re looking for ways to give LB a bit more power in a healthy way, so we’re talking more deception and cleverness rather than more damage.

You’re hitting Kha’Zix’s W just because players use it now

Riot Jag Final PortraitThe direction we’ve always wanted to take Kha’zix is that he has to be an opportunistic assassin. To exert his power on the field, he needs to find the correct windows of vulnerability on the enemy team instead of brute forcing his way. Much like DR on his earlier versions of evolved ultimate, or the damage profile on his old Q, this version of W gives him the ability to force action.

I sympathize with you that continuous nerfs to a champion can be frustrating. That said, we’ve tried to reorient Kha’zix’s power in ways that are healthy for the game while still giving him the opportunity to be picked. We don’t plan on nerfing him to the point where he does not feel viable.

You can’t force players to isolate themselves as Kha’Zix

Riot Jag Final PortraitYou bring up some good points. The part that is questionable to me is asserting that teams can ensure they literally never will prevent themselves from becoming isolated. I think the natural chaos of teamfights means that positioning is a dynamic state, and opportunities will always present themselves, even against top-level players. Furthermore, certain champions control space or just create disruption and isolation naturally (e.g.: Gragas), so I think teams that play Kha’zix will always have tools to make certain he’ll find his spots.

That said, isolation has often been challenging to tune correctly, both in terms of range of isolation and in terms of payoff to Kha’zix. The clarity issue is made worse by the concept of isolation being difficult to understand. I wonder how you’d feel Guardian of the Sands Kha’zix feels in this regard?

That said, Akali’s a tough gal to strike the right balance. As the update to Summoner’s Rift continues to percolate on the PBE, we’re looking to address the fact that many of League’s older champion and skins were created using the Rift’s current look and color palette (or even older ones), which continues to evolve over time. At this point, many champion and skin textures need a bit of rebalancing to ensure they look nice regardless of where they’re standing, or who they’re standing next to.

We’re talking just about every champion and skin released before 2013 (with a few outliers). This may seem scary, but I want to emphasize that these will generally be small tweaks; corrections rather than major changes. Due to the scale of the project, this won’t all be coming at once, so don’t despair if you don’t see your favorite champion in the first batch! Here’s an example of what you’ll eventually see (old on the left, new on the right):


This then ties back to the update to SR, as one of our primary goals with the update is fleshing out LoL’s visual hierarchy. Put simply, this means that particles should have the highest visibility, followed by characters, then finally the environment and map. Rebalancing characters’ colors and textures gives us the chance to also better execute within that visual hierarchy.

We also aim for hierarchy on the characters themselves, drawing attention to key areas like heads and weapons through highlights, while dropping the values on less visible or important areas so it doesn’t distract from characters’ focal points. At the highest level, we want to ensure that everything looks consistent, and that the art always adds to, rather than detracts, from gameplay.

With these goals in mind, we’ve locked several character artists in a room (no, they’re really in there – they’ve got classic rock playing on a loop, and we’re occasionally throwing them some food or something), and they’re cranking away in order to finish things up by the time the update to SR hits Live. We’ll be rolling these out over time, and you’ll see the first batch of ~10 tomorrow on the PBE (barring any hitches!).

Q: Could you explain a little more of the technical details of this?

While making these changes, we’re reassessing the finer details and making calls to emphasize certain areas of characters with the goal of increasing overall visual fidelity. Because we have a very zoomed out isometric camera angle, we want to communicate the important parts of a character without detracting from them as a whole. In other mediums (minigames, Udyr comic, cinematics like ‘A New Dawn,’ etc.) characters will also show a level of detail suitable for the angle in question.

This is something we’ve already been doing with new champions and skins to increase readability and clarity, while minimizing pixel flicker and excess noise. Our goal is never to take something away from our characters. We continue to develop and iterate on all our characters so they look like they fit inside of the same world, and in this case so they’ll have visual consistency on the Rift.

Q: Are you updating skins as well?

Absolutely. We always consider skins when working on champions, although in this case most recent skins already reach the quality standard that we’re shooting for on this project.

However, there will be a few instances where we’ll deliver some changes to a character that will only affect their default appearance. An example of this is a metal shader that we’re adding to Orianna’s base texture, which will not be applied to the skins at this time. This is being done opportunely where we see a chance to do justice to the character’s core identity.

Q: Will this affect the releases of Champion Updates?

Nope! This isn’t a project done by ChampUp, so it won’t affect any of the upcoming projects in the slightest.

Now that Nidalee has been out and about on the Live environment for awhile, we wanted to make some changes to her to address a few issues. There are all sorts of ideas floating around out there as to what to do about her, ranging from ‘leave her alone’ to ‘please just delete her.’ Not too surprisingly, I’m sure, we haven’t opted for either of those, but here’s what we have decided to do.

One of the paramount problems with Nidalee in from a playing against perspective is that she doesn’t offer opponents meaningful windows during which they can put their guard down or feel like they have the upper hand, especially during the laning phase. Nidalee is intended to have short periods of time between Javelin Toss cooldowns where she is somewhat less dangerous, but when she builds primarily AD duelist items, that weakness seems like it’s hardly there anymore. To that end, the approach we are taking is one that will hopefully help to emphasize her windows of strength and weakness, and we feel that moving her more toward the direction of AP or AP bruiser will help with that. AP builds almost always have lower power from basic attacks, so we think that if she can move a bit in that direction, she won’t pose a such a high constant level of threat to opponents, particularly in the lane phase.

One final thing to note is that Nidalee is not exactly known for her incredible teamfighting capabilities, and a large contributor to that is that she actually offers opponents so many ways to play against her in a teamfight environment. As such, we’ve made a small change to the way the Pounce reset on Hunt works to give Nidalee players more consistent results on the mobility end when Hunting.

While in combat Gnar generates Fury. At maximum Fury, his next ability will transform him into Mega Gnar, granting increased survivability and access to new spells.

 

Boomerang Throw / Boulder Toss [ Q ]

Range: 1100 || Cooldown: 20/17.5/15/12.5/10 seconds

Mini Gnar: Throws a boomerang that deals 10 / 45 / 80 / 115 / 150 (+ 1.0 AD) physical damage and slows Movement Speed by 15/20/25/30/35% for 2 seconds before returning towards Gnar. Enemies hit beyond the first take 50% damage.

The returning boomerang will accelerate and can travel up to 2000 units. If Gnar catches it, the cooldown of Boomerang Throw is reduced by 60%.

Mega Gnar: Throws a boulder that stops when it hits an enemy, slowing all nearby enemies and dealing 10/50/90/130/170 (+) physical damage.

Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds. If Gnar picks up his boulder, the cooldown of Boulder Toss is reduced by 60%.

 

Hyper / Wallop [ W ]

Mini Gnar: Passive: Every 3rd attack or spell on the same target deals an additional 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 (+ 1.0 AP) + 6/8/10/12/14% of max HP as magic damage and grants Gnar 30% Movement Speed that decays over 3 seconds (max 75/125/175/225/275 damage vs. monsters). Gnar gains Hyper’s speed bonus whenever he turns from Big to Small.

Mega Gnar: Stuns enemies in an area for 1.25 seconds, dealing 25 / 45 / 65 / 85 / 105 (+ 1.0 AD) physical damage.

 


Hop / Crunch [ E ]

Range: 475  || Cooldown: 18/16.5/15/13.5/12 seconds

Mini Gnar: Leaps to a location, gaining 20/30/40/50/60% Attack Speed for 3 seconds. If Gnar lands on a unit he will bounce off of it, traveling further. Deals 20 / 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 (+ 6% of Gnar’s max HP) physical damage and slows briefly if the unit landed on was an enemy.

Mega Gnar: Leaps to a location and deals 20 / 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 (+ 6% of Gnar’s max HP) physical damage to all nearby enemies on landing. Enemies Gnar lands directly on top of are slowed briefly.

If Crunch is the ability used to trigger the Rage Gene, Gnar will still be able to perform Hop’s bounce. Gnar will apply Crunch’s area of effect both upon hopping from a unit and upon hitting the ground, although enemies can only be damaged once.

Mini Gnar: Passive: Increases Hyper’s Movement Speed bonus to 45/60/75%.

“The jungle does not forgive blindness. Every broken branch tells a story.

I’ve hunted every creature this jungle has to offer. I was certain there were no challenges left here, but now there is something new. Each track is the size of a tusklord; its claws like scimitars. It could rend a man in half. Finally, worthy prey.

As I stalk my prize through the jungle, I begin to see the damage this thing has wrought. I step into a misshapen circle of splintered trees. These giant wooden sentinels have stood over this land for countless ages, their iron-like hides untouched by the flimsy axes of anyone foolish enough to attempt to cut them down. This thing brushed them aside like they were twigs.

How can a creature with this level of strength disappear so easily? And yet, even though it has left this unmistakable trail of destruction, I have been unable to lay my eye upon it. How can it appear like a hurricane then fade into the jungle like the morning mist?

I thrill in anticipation of finally standing before this creature. It will make a tremendous trophy.

Passing through the clearing, I follow the sound of a stream to get my bearings once more. There I see a small shock of orange fur, crouching, waiting. I spy on it from a distance. A tiny fish splashes out of the stream and the creature scrambles for it, diving gleefully into the rushing water. To my joy, I realize it’s a yordle. And a hunter, at that!

This is a good omen. The beast will be found. Nothing will escape me.

The yordle’s large ears perk up and face towards me. He runs on all fours with a bone boomerang in hand, quickly stopping in front of me. He babbles.

I nod in appreciation at the young yordle and venture onwards. I traverse the difficult terrain with ease, trying to pick up any sign of my quarry. As I try to pick up his scent, a distraction. I’m startled by strange chittering. The yordle followed me. I cannot allow him to disrupt my hunt. I face him and point into the distance. He looks at me quizzically. I need to be more insistent, good omen or no.

I rear back and let out a roar, the wind whipping the yordle’s fur and the ground rumbling beneath us. After a few short seconds, he turns his head and, with what I think could be a smile, he holds up his small boomerang. There can be no further delay. I snatch the weapon out of his hand and expertly throw it into a tree, impaling it high amongst the branches. He turns and scrambles for it, jumping frantically.

I barely get ten paces when a roar shakes me to my very spine. The deafening crack of stone and wood echoes all around. Ahead, a giant tree crashes across my path. The bone weapon of the yordle juts out from its trunk.

An unearthly growl rises behind me.
