HEXTECH CRAFTING Banner

This is a new in-client system that nets you rewards like skins and Champions. Below I’ve written down all the ways you can earn content and craft:

You’ll need Hextech Keys and Hextech Chests. You’ll earn Hextech Keys for winning matchmade games (meaning any game type except Custom games).

Chests are trickier; they’re rewards for performing well on a particular Champion. You earn chests through the Mastery system, but keep in mind that you can only earn one chest per season with a given Champion. Every time you get an S rank, you’ll get a chest, up to a maximum of four chests per month.

Alternatively, you can buy both keys and chests for 125 RP each in the store.

Crafting 1 Crafting 2

Once you have a pair, you can open chests using keys through the interface found by clicking on the shard icon below your username. After the animation, you’ll receive either a Champion Shard, a Skin Shard, a Ward Skin Shard, Cosmic Essence, Champion Essence or a combination of all those. Note that a chest will never contain essence only.

Think of Champion and Skin Shards as tickets for temporary access to Champions. You can do four things with those.

Crafting 4

First, you can re-roll both types of Shards into permanent Champions or Skins, respectively. To do so, you’ll need three Shards. The catch? Your reward is random.

You can disenchant both Champion Shards and Skin Shards for Champion Essence and Skins Essence, respectively.

Crafting 11 Crafting 12

You’ll need this essence to upgrade Champion Shards and Skin Shards into specific permanent Champions and Skins:

Lastly, you can rent Champions and Skins for 7 days. This will use up their respective Shards.

Crafting 13

The rent period will be displayed on your Summoner Profile. It’s also the place where you can check how many chests you can unlock until the end of the month and what Champions you’ve already unlocked a chest with.

Crafting 15

Crafting 14

Sometimes you’ll find Rare Gems in your chests. These contain one chest and one key.

Crafting 9 Crafting 10

You can earn Ward Skin Shards through these chests. These work the same way as regular Skin Shards.

Crafting 7 Crafting 8

You can also earn Summoner Icons. These will instantly be added to your account.

Crafting 5 Crafting 6

Shadow Isles Lore

The following Champions have received additional Shadow Isle-based lore in the client.

Elise Final Portrait

Elise’s entrancing beauty and grace conceal the pitiless, black heart of a deadly predator. With ruthless cunning, she lures the unsuspecting with promises of favor from the spider god. Having exchanged her humanity to become something far more sinister, Elise sacrifices the innocent to maintain her power and seemingly eternal youth. No one can fathom how many have been caught in her web, slain to feed her insatiable hunger.

Evelynn Final Portrait

Swift and lethal, Evelynn is one of the most deadly – and expensive – assassins in all of Runeterra. Able to merge with the shadows at will, she patiently stalks her prey, waiting for the right moment to strike. While Evelynn is clearly not entirely human, and her heritage remains unclear, it is believed that she hails from the Shadow Isles – though her link with that tortured realm remains shrouded in mystery.

Hecarim Final Portrait

Hecarim is a towering, armored specter whose name is whispered fearfully across the length and breadth of Runeterra. He patrols the Shadow Isles, running down anyone foolish enough to set foot upon its cursed soil. As the vanguard of undeath, Hecarim rides forth from the Black Mist, laughing mockingly as he tramples the living beneath his iron-shod hooves.

Karthus Final Portrait

Karthus is a harbinger of oblivion, zealously devoted to the beauty and clarity of death. Even in his youth, he was utterly obsessed with mortality, growing ever more relentless in the pursuit of his dark desires. Yearning to be one with death itself, Karthus journeyed to the Shadow Isles and willingly offered himself to undeath. Karthus transformed into the Deathsinger, a dread lich existing solely to deliver the blessed gift of annihilation.

Maokai Final Portrait

Maokai was bound to a gnarled tree by the dark magic that transformed the Shadow Isles. The once-peaceful nature spirit is now a corruption of his former self. Infused with power that he never asked for, he has become a destructive force, sundering his enemies with wild magic and crushing limbs. Maokai continues to wander Valoran, seeking the means to bring life back to his forest home.

Mordekaiser Final Portrait

The vicious wraith Mordekaiser is among the most terrifying and hateful of spirits that haunt the Shadow Isles. Entombed in ancient armor, the Master of Metal is said to be the first of the unliving, a revenant who existed even before the Shadow Isles were wrought. His twisted soul thrives on his own suffering, as well as the anguish he inflicts upon others. Those who dare face Mordekaiser in battle risk a horrific curse: he enslaves his victims’ souls to become instruments of destruction.

Thresh Final Portrait

Thresh is a sadistic, spectral reaper who relishes tormenting the living and the dead. Once a jailer who mercilessly brutalized all under his charge, Thresh was hanged from his own chains by the prisoners he had tortured. With his vicious essence unbound, the Chain Warden roams Runeterra in search of prey. He derives twisted joy from slowly breaking the minds of his most defiant victims, before trapping their souls within the sickly green light of his lantern.

Yorick Final Portrait

A terrifying and tragic figure, Yorick is a ghoulish being that exists on the edge of mortality. Some say he was the last of his family line, dying without an heir to continue its legacy, and that he is cursed to continue to his family’s duty even after death. Wielding the twisted shovel he bore in life, he continues his macabre work, endlessly digging and filling graves upon the haunted Shadow Isles.

Rage Gene [ Passive ]

While in combat Gnar generates Fury. At maximum Fury, his next ability will transform him into Mega Gnar, granting increased survivability and access to new spells.

Boomerang Throw / Boulder Toss [ Q ]

Range: 1100 || Cooldown: 20/17.5/15/12.5/10 seconds

Mini Gnar: Throws a boomerang that deals 10 / 45 / 80 / 115 / 150 (+ 1.0 AD) physical damage and slows Movement Speed by 15/20/25/30/35% for 2 seconds before returning towards Gnar. Enemies hit beyond the first take 50% damage.

The returning boomerang will accelerate and can travel up to 2000 units. If Gnar catches it, the cooldown of Boomerang Throw is reduced by 60%.

Mega Gnar: Throws a boulder that stops when it hits an enemy, slowing all nearby enemies and dealing 10/50/90/130/170 (+) physical damage.

Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds. If Gnar picks up his boulder, the cooldown of Boulder Toss is reduced by 60%.

Hyper / Wallop [ W ]

Mini Gnar: Passive: Every 3rd attack or spell on the same target deals an additional 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 (+ 1.0 AP) + 6/8/10/12/14% of max HP as magic damage and grants Gnar 30% Movement Speed that decays over 3 seconds (max 75/125/175/225/275 damage vs. monsters). Gnar gains Hyper’s speed bonus whenever he turns from Big to Small.

Mega Gnar: Stuns enemies in an area for 1.25 seconds, dealing 25 / 45 / 65 / 85 / 105 (+ 1.0 AD) physical damage.

Hop / Crunch [ E ]

Range: 475  || Cooldown: 18/16.5/15/13.5/12 seconds

Mini Gnar: Leaps to a location, gaining 20/30/40/50/60% Attack Speed for 3 seconds. If Gnar lands on a unit he will bounce off of it, traveling further. Deals 20 / 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 (+ 6% of Gnar’s max HP) physical damage and slows briefly if the unit landed on was an enemy.

Mega Gnar: Leaps to a location and deals 20 / 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 (+ 6% of Gnar’s max HP) physical damage to all nearby enemies on landing. Enemies Gnar lands directly on top of are slowed briefly.

If Crunch is the ability used to trigger the Rage Gene, Gnar will still be able to perform Hop’s bounce. Gnar will apply Crunch’s area of effect both upon hopping from a unit and upon hitting the ground, although enemies can only be damaged once.

GNAR! [ R ]

Lore

“The jungle does not forgive blindness. Every broken branch tells a story.

I’ve hunted every creature this jungle has to offer. I was certain there were no challenges left here, but now there is something new. Each track is the size of a tusklord; its claws like scimitars. It could rend a man in half. Finally, worthy prey.

As I stalk my prize through the jungle, I begin to see the damage this thing has wrought. I step into a misshapen circle of splintered trees. These giant wooden sentinels have stood over this land for countless ages, their iron-like hides untouched by the flimsy axes of anyone foolish enough to attempt to cut them down. This thing brushed them aside like they were twigs.

How can a creature with this level of strength disappear so easily? And yet, even though it has left this unmistakable trail of destruction, I have been unable to lay my eye upon it. How can it appear like a hurricane then fade into the jungle like the morning mist?

I thrill in anticipation of finally standing before this creature. It will make a tremendous trophy.

Passing through the clearing, I follow the sound of a stream to get my bearings once more. There I see a small shock of orange fur, crouching, waiting. I spy on it from a distance. A tiny fish splashes out of the stream and the creature scrambles for it, diving gleefully into the rushing water. To my joy, I realize it’s a yordle. And a hunter, at that!

This is a good omen. The beast will be found. Nothing will escape me.

The yordle’s large ears perk up and face towards me. He runs on all fours with a bone boomerang in hand, quickly stopping in front of me. He babbles.

I nod in appreciation at the young yordle and venture onwards. I traverse the difficult terrain with ease, trying to pick up any sign of my quarry. As I try to pick up his scent, a distraction. I’m startled by strange chittering. The yordle followed me. I cannot allow him to disrupt my hunt. I face him and point into the distance. He looks at me quizzically. I need to be more insistent, good omen or no.

I rear back and let out a roar, the wind whipping the yordle’s fur and the ground rumbling beneath us. After a few short seconds, he turns his head and, with what I think could be a smile, he holds up his small boomerang. There can be no further delay. I snatch the weapon out of his hand and expertly throw it into a tree, impaling it high amongst the branches. He turns and scrambles for it, jumping frantically.

I barely get ten paces when a roar shakes me to my very spine. The deafening crack of stone and wood echoes all around. Ahead, a giant tree crashes across my path. The bone weapon of the yordle juts out from its trunk.

An unearthly growl rises behind me.

I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Will Nocturne receive any changes in Patch 4

Meddler New PortraitNoc was on the list of champs we assessed for this patch, conclusion we came to was that he was in a reasonable spot. He’s getting the occasional bit of competitive play at the moment, via his ult has a distinct reason to be picked as a jungler, performs appropriately in solo queue and will probably benefit a little from nerfs to the current top tier junglers. As a result we decided to leave him alone.

Also, for anyone curious, just had a look to see how many champions we’re changing in said patch. Not quite 40, but close ish – 30, with (as I read it) 14 champs nerfed, 15 buffed and one with significant gameplay changes focused on playstyle, not power (Sona).

Source on updates in Patch 4

Meddler New PortraitPatch notes will have all the details. Lot of these are relatively small changes, aimed at either trimming a champ’s power without making them unseen or making them a bit more competitive without making them really dominant picks.

Do you have any news about Urgot's rework

Meddler New PortraitFull rework – not this year.

Smaller set of changes potentially in patch 4.15 (4.13’s just about to come out for context). Current details on those changes can be found in these two posts:

If Lulu top is nerfed, will Lulu support be compensated for

Meddler New PortraitIf we nerf solo lane Lulu we would like to give support Lulu some power in a way that doesn’t create problems in other lanes. No firm plans for what/when etc yet though, still under discussion.

Why is Lux’s burst being buffed

[ Context ] Lux’s passive was given an AP ratio in a recent PBE update.

Meddler New Portrait The goal there is to buff Lux’s power a bit mid/late game (once she’s got AP) in a way that doesn’t primarily offer safe power. Keeps her passive more relevant and gives her more damage if she’s prepared to auto attack a bit more.

Which Champion do you think will get this year’s Victorious Skin
Wizardcrab New PortraitI will say I will fight my hardest to make sure that the Victorious skin isn’t for a champion that only has 1 other skin (release skin). Will I win that fight? I dunno. But I didn’t like that Elise got the last one with only one other skin, leaving players that love Elise but didn’t make gold high and dry when it comes to further customization options. We’ll see what happens though.

Anyone else have thoughts on that last point?

What happened to the lifetime RP purchase rewards

Wizardcrab New PortraitThere were a lot of versions, but until we have a finalized, released version I think it would be unwise to talk about the details. It’s really about making sure we’re rewarding the right people for the right reasons with compelling rewards, which is actually more difficult than it sounds.

Why was there no Mecha Skin Bundle

Wizardcrab New PortraitThere wasn’t a bundle because we wanted to see how people interacted with skin sets without a bundle. They’re prolly be one if/when we release new mecha skins.

Neither the icon nor the ward are limited time only.

Why the Mecha Summoner Icon isn’t available for IP

Wizardcrab New PortraitHey guys, I just want to clear up a couple of things.

Like a lot of people in this thread are saying, the IP price for summoner icons is a thing that has so far only been tied to specific events. We’ve done it for Lunar Revel, Pentakill, and the soccer (football) stuff. The strategy is still slightly malleable but it is likely going to be as follows:

For event-based purchasable icons, there will be an RP price and an IP price that will remain for the duration of the event. The reason event-based icons have an IP price is to help generate enthusiasm for the event. When you logged in and half of your friends list was sporting the Pentakill icon, it was super cool and got you excited for what was happening (at least it was like that for me). But, if the icon is to remain in the store permanently, the IP price will be removed after the event. Purchasable icons that are not event-based (like the Mecha icon) will generally not have IP prices. The Mecha icon is here to let players further signify their love of the skin line rather than to get people pumped for the release of these skins. Only having an RP price is our general strategy regarding non gameplay-affecting cosmetic content, and these fall into that category. I added to this confusion by forgetting to remove the IP price from the Hat Trick Icon after July 13th in some regions, and for that I apologize.

I know that the definition of an event is a little confusing here, and I’ll admit I don’t have an incredibly clear answer for that. Specifically for just this context, an event involves more than just a themed skin release/promotion site (often with some time-sensitive component). I know that’s super vague but we’re always trying new things and to be honest they’ll probably be determined on a case-by-case basis.

As far as the IP sink argument goes, summoner icons is not the place where we’re trying to solve that issue. I don’t want to get in a huge debate about IP sinks in this particular thread, but I’m happy to discuss that in other places (like my thread in the forums or another reddit thread or something).

I hope this makes sense.

Why can’t we report players for hacking

WookieeCookie New PortraitWe’re working on a place to report potential hackers/exploiters etc etc. In the meantime, if you think someone is legitimately exploiting you should leave a note in the report you make at the end of the match.

We don’t really have an in-game report function for this because it would be easy for false positives. Sometimes a player is just good and not cheating. :X

You can also report them to us on our support site too.

Why don’t you make Viktor’s Hex Core similar to Rengar’s BTN

Scarizard New PortraitAs one of the original implementors of the ‘Bonetooth Trinket’ experiment, none of us ever promised that Viktor would follow the same if it worked. IMO, Viktor’s item is best left as an item (but one with greater flexibility/upgrades), where Rengar’s trinket was low-scope enough to ditch the stats and become a trinket.

It’s just my opinion though, and totally within the discretion of the designer/team working on Viktor to make those decisions.
