After one of their players was recently suspended, OPL team Rich Gang have found themselves in trouble yet again, this time resulting in the immediate removal of the team from the league.
League of Legends Competition Ruling
Team: Rich Gang
Date of Ruling: March 20th, 2015
Subject: Violation of OPL Team Agreement
Since their inclusion in the League, the team known as Rich Gang has repeatedly demonstrated an inability to fulfill the requirements of a professional organisation in the OPL. Rich Gang has shown a lack of institutional governance over their players represented by the three separate player suspensions (first, second and third) for in-game behaviour, and repeated inappropriate actions on team social media accounts.
Rich Gang has also demonstrated a disappointing lack of professionalism on their own social media channels, resulting in lewd, racist, abusive and otherwise indecent content released on a regular basis. OPL officials have made multiple attempts to work with the organisation and players of Rich Gang about their behaviour. Despite assurances from the organisation that behaviour would improve, it has not, and it seems the organisation is incapable of delivering on those assurances.
8.2.4 Discrimination and Denigration
Team Members may not offend the dignity or integrity of a country, private person, or group of people through contemptuous, discriminatory, or denigrating words or actions on account of race, skin color, ethnic, national or social origin, gender, language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, financial status, birth or any other status, sexual orientation or any other reason.
Harassment is forbidden. Harassment is defined as systematic, hostile, and repeated acts taking place over a considerable period of time, which are intended to isolate or ostracize a person and/or affect the dignity of the person.
8.2.7 Player Behavior Investigation
If Riot determines that a Team Member has violated the Summoner’s Code, the LoL Terms of Service, or other rules of LoL, Riot officials may assign penalties at their sole discretion.
In addition, each OPL organisation signs an agreement with Riot which includes an immediate right of termination if “the Team Owner fails to manage its Team Members or Team Managers effectively and such failure causes, or would reasonably be expected to cause, harm to the League or other OPL teams or players, including harm that follows as a consequence of the Team Members or Team Managers repeatedly failing or refusing to obey the Rules or the written instructions of the League issued pursuant to the Rules†or if “a Team Member or Team Manager commits any act or becomes involved in any situation or occurrence which the League believes, in its sole judgment, brings the Team, Team Member or Team Manager into public disrepute, scandal or ridicule, or shocks or offends the community, or derogates from her/his/its public image or reflects unfavorably upon the LoL Game, the League or any League Entity.â€
Effective immediately, the team known as Rich Gang will be removed from the Oceanic Pro
League. Any previous player suspensions will remain in effect for the entirety of the described term outlined in the corresponding rulings. The organisation (including the individual owner) of Rich Gang is indefinitely prohibited from owning another team in the OPL. Any team members and/or team affiliates who are not currently serving a suspension will be free to join other teams.
Any remaining games to be played by Rich Gang will result in an automatic forfeit, and a point awarded to their scheduled opponent. For the second split, their place in the OPL will be automatically awarded to the first-place team of the current Oceanic Challenger Series tournament.
Removing a team from professional competition is not an easy decision, nor one we enjoy making. The Riot Oceania team is fully committed to working with all organisations to improve their standing in the esports community, but that work can only succeed if paired with genuine effort from the organisation. In this particular case, the lack of institutional management over the players, the organisation’s inappropriate social media content and the failure to meet the requirements of the OPL Team Agreement have demonstrated a fundamental misalignment between Rich Gang and the OPL. We hope the non-offending Rich Gang players will find another team and continue to compete in the OPL..
