Taric_PassiveBravado [ Passive ]

Taric infuses his next two basic attacks whenever he casts an ability. He swings faster with these two attacks, which deal increased damage and reduce his cooldowns.



Taric_QStarlight’s Touch [ Q ]

Taric heals himself and all nearby allies based on the number of Starlight’s Touch charges he’s stored. Taric generates up to three charges over time.



Taric_WBastion [ W ]

All of Taric’s abilities are simultaneously cast from both Taric and his linked ally.

Passive: Bastion increases Taric’s armor.

Active: Taric links with an ally, shielding them from damage. Bastion remains on Taric’s ally until he recasts it onto another ally, or the two move far enough apart to break their link.



Taric_EDazzle [ E ]

After a brief delay, Taric fires out a short wave of celestial energy in a target direction that stuns all enemies struck.



Taric_RCosmic Radiance [ R ]

Taric calls on the stars themselves for protection. After a moderate delay, he and all nearby allies become invulnerable for a few seconds.

I won’t be the best source of insight on projects that I didn’t work on, but feel free to use this post as a place where you can ask specifically about any of the projects I’ve worked on in the last year or two, and I’ll do my best to give you honest, direct answers about why things were made the way they were, and how I/we feel about these projects currently. Keep in mind that if they’re outside of issues I worked on, it’s likely I won’t be able to meaningful answers, and also that I won’t guarantee you’ll like what I have to share on some topics.

Do you plan on balancing champions around windows of power

Repertoir New PortraitIt’s definitely an option, but it’s not the only way. We should probably be continuing to look for unexplored or less explored counterplay. Otherwise we end up with stuff like “Thanks Riot, another line skillshot.” I can see the same being true of any overused design, and I’d say I’ve probably leaned a bit too hard on “windows of power.”

Why is Riot always so unwilling to revert changes completely

Repertoir New PortraitAs a ground floor game designer that doesn’t really make the big decisions like these, I really can’t do much more than make guesses on this subject, and I don’t really think that’s fair to you guys. Sorry if that sounds like dodging. I’d enlighten you with what I had if I had it.

From the perspective of someone works on champions and gameplay, I really do think that the number of cases where full reverts would be a step forward for the game are very few and far between (especially when considering the large amount of content regularly being added/modified in the game). I can’t think of many cases where I’d say a compromise isn’t the better solution, but that is a matter of perspective (and bias, I’m sure).

Which of your reworks is your favourite Which one surprised you

Repertoir New PortraitI think there’s a few different ways to consider this.

  • Nidalee is incredibly near and dear to my heart. Her design is all over the place and is a mess of complex mechanics and inputs, but I think she offers a really fun and unique challenge to players that put the time into her, and I love to watch a good player enjoy her.
    *As far as which I’m most proud of from a craft perspective, I’d say Ashe. Her changes were simple and exciting to players, and I think they helped to bring her from what a lot of people considered a joke pick to a real contender at all levels.

As far as which I was most surprised by once released, I’d definitely say Kog’Maw. Every bit of feedback I had from internal testing and PBE feedback led me to believe he would be broken, which is so odd in hindsight given how much he’s struggled since the Marksman Update.

I think she could be a really cool candidate for someone that uses her blades to attack two targets at once, or she could just generally deliver a lot better on blade telekinesis thing. I’d try to leave Q alone at all costs unless it was to make it feel better. I love Bladesurge.

I will say that I think she’s really held up against the test of time, as she seems to pop into and out of play reliably, but that may be a matter of statistics or something.

One of the tricky things about doing it is making it feel intentional on the player’s part. For the longest time, I had this in for Rune Prison while doing Ryze’s update, but most of the time it happened, it was accidental at best.

It’s stuff that’s not easily datamined however, so I’m not sure if it’s been widely noticed (smaller collision radius so he gets stuck on other units less, slight increase to Q range, Q ticking more rapidly for less damage giving it the same damage over time but making it a little easier to last hit with).

Jag started that, and when we decided to dedicate ourselves to a Marksmen project a few months ago, I still thought it was a cool idea and tried to make something of it. I agree with you that it has its oddities, and I think a lot of those come from trying to make too much change with too few resources to make it happen on my end. Her R is powerful, but the channel feels a little awkward and has some weird restrictions on it, and even to me it feels like it’s unique and fun, but that it’s also lower overall quality than I’d like it to be.

What made you decide to lump Skarner in with the Juggernaut crowd

That said, there will be a Skarner retrospective post coming to the Boards soon I believe, and one of the things we talk about there is that we probably improperly classified Skarner as a Juggernaut and not some other kind of fighter or tank.

How long does it take to prepare and ship out Champion or Class updates

Meddler Final PortraitLarger class updates like the Marksmen one take quite a bit of work, so we’re probably looking at a couple of those a year. Immobile mages is what we’ve decided to focus on for the next one, and we’ll have some early details on what that update will be focused on to share sometime this month. That’ll look at stuff like goals, which characters we’re planning to work on, rough timeframe etc, not specific kit changes.


We will also have some individual reworks done separately from those class based ones still. Those will generally either be champions that need a complete overhaul with new kits, visuals, VO etc (Taric and Yorick for example) or champions that have some fundamental gameplay problems we need to address (we believe Ryze for example needs more than just balance adjustments to be both healthy and fun at the same time). We’ll also occasionally do other small updates where a bit of extra bandwidth permits some opportunistic work, the Shen gameplay update for example which is getting pretty close.

As far as the number of subclasses go we’ve got about a dozen we’ve been using internally. Plan is to tidy the definitions of those up a bit and throw them into a devblog for anyone that’s interested.

Will Brand be nerfed in some way next patch

Meddler Final PortraitYeah, Brand’s definitely too strong at present. There’s a bug fix in 6.1 however that should take a noticeable amount of power away from him. At present his ult almost always prioritizes champions, rather than only priotizing champions if the target it’s bouncing from is already Ablaze. That makes it quite a bit easier for him to burst enemies down in most circumstances. The fix for that should go out in the patch next week, unless any delays crop up, after that we’ll then reassess and see if any further changes are needed.

What if you reduced the width of his Q

Meddler Final PortraitBrand Q has a width of 60 (same as Mystic Shot as a point of reference). It’s elevated off the ground however, which means that at certain angles the hit location (on the ground) doesn’t match up well with the intuitive hit location (the missile itself). Almost all skillshots suffer from that problem to some degree, unless they’re at ground level. Due to Brand’s height however it’s more pronounced on him than most.

What if Ohmwrecker had an active that also worked on allied turrets

Meddler Final PortraitYeah, Ohmwrecker’s still in a pretty sad spot. We did try out some stuff during the preseason development period to try and make it more interesting in its niche, with tower sieging still being its core. The most interesting approach, that alas didn’t end up working very well, was a version of it that replaced your auto attacks against towers with a ranged channel that dealt ramping damage over time. Gave melee champs a way to contribute siege damage without having to hard commit basically. Was fun to play around with, but hard to justify taking over other options, even on the characters it was theoretically designed for.

At some point we will take another look at Ohmwrecker, though I suspect if it doesn’t work out next time we’ll probably end up cutting it. Making it less situational, while keeping it tower focused still, could be a reasonable approach, and an allied tower interaction sounds worth a try as a result.

Whats in a Name Inappropriate Name Change Audit FAQ

Earlier today, the PBJ Dev team launched a new initiative they have been working on the last few weeks targeted at innapropriate names. There’s been a few threads here on Reddit from confused players and rather than have the confusion spread all over the place, I figured we can consolidate it all in this thread.

Below is an FAQ I prepared based off the questions we are seeing. Hopefully it will address your main questions, but if it doesn’t feel free to contact us at Player Support.

Why did rito do this?

The goal is simple, target players with inappropriate names and automatically change their name to something more innocent. For example, someone with the disgustingly inappropriate name “TeemoIsTheBest” may receive a new name like “AdorableFriend”.

This name change will occur without any input required from a player.

Players who have their name changed will receive an e-mail at the address associated with their account. Within this e-mail is an explanation of why their Summoner Name was changed and a link to next steps they can take to receive a new name within the client free of charge.

I think there was an error! My name shouldn’t have been changed!

Because this is a new initiative we’re keeping an eye out for any kinks in the process.

For example, one issue we’ve noticed is that if you previously had an inappropriate name but only recently changed it, you still would have been flagged by our system and received a name change in this wave.

For example, let’s say on October 1st, your summoner name was “FckTeemo420XXXYoloSwagButts”. But on October 2nd you decided to update your summoner name to *“420XXYoloSwagButts”. For some players, our data did not update properly. So you were still flagged in our system and on October 13th your name was changed.

But fear not. If you really want “420XXXYoloSwagButts” back then you can contact Player Support and we will return it free of charge.

In any future waves we’ll work to make sure our data is updated to reflect current names as of the day the audit is launched.

Will I face long term consequences if my name was caught in this wave?

Currently no. You won’t receive an in-game ban, loss of ranked rewards, or any other form of punishment for being caught with an inappropriate name on the first offense. (caveat: if your name was REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY bad, then ya, maybe something extra might happen to you)

HOWEVER, if you decide in the future to regain an inappropriate name the account may face further punishment including an in-game ban among other terrible dark things.

How did you find inappropriate names?

I won’t go into the specifics but it was mixture of things which include feedback from players, individual audits by a Rioter, magic, and a lot of alcohol.

What server was this initative on?

This name change audit was only done on the NA, EU and OCE servers at this time. In the future it may be brought to other regions.

Did you notice that you misspelled inappropriate in the title of this thread?

FML. There is no edit option for titles of reddit threads.

TL;DR: Bad names have been automatically updated to something innocent. If you are affected check the e-mail associated with your account for more details on how to get a free name change. If you are one of the minority of players who received a name change in error, contact Player Support to revert your name or receive a name change free of charge.

However, we have been pretty hands off in the past, so it’s possible that someone with an offensive (or borderline offensive name) thought it was okay because they were never actioned on until now.

An alternative is that a name really wasn’t offensive and shouldn’t have been changed at all. (Check my example for an issue that led to some people received name changes that shouldn’t have).

In these examples though we will revert their name change and use the data to improve our audits in the future.

We won’t find all variations on the first go, but like a lot of our systems they become smarter over time.

What was the inspiration for Zombie Nunus voiceover

Vonderhamz Final PortraitI can’t show the exact document, but I can give a taste of what the process was!

The first step was trying to define the character. I still wanted it to feel like Nunu and Willump, but since they’re zombies, we had to factor that into their personalities. One challenge that came with this skin, is in order to get it out in time, we couldn’t localize the VO into other languages; so it couldn’t contain anything that sounded like any word, in any language, hence the zombie speak. In order to help narrow down what personality each character should have, I gathered references from all over to see what’s been done in the realm of big lumbering zombies, and smaller energetic zombies. I went from things like creatures in Gears of War, to L4D, to Evan Baxter reading the news in Bruce Almighty.

In game, we have a bunch of different lines that are triggered depending on what the champion is doing, such as moving, attacking, spell casting, dying, etc. Since Nunu is really old, he only had 20 or so lines of VO. He has over 4 times that for this skin. For each one of these categories we had descriptions of the tone that the lines should be read back at. Attack lines should be aggressive, move lines should be more subdued. All lines should try and have some back and forth between characters. Aggressive and subdued sound different for both Willump and Nunu because of what the references and personalities are for each character.

Once we had a script with a clear emotional state for each type of line, we brought in our magnificent Zombie Willump talent: the audio team’s Riot Eno and had him record a bunch of stuff for each type of line. We also had a few other sound designers, myself included, try out some zombie vocals, but Riot Eno was the clear choice. The burps are a mix of a few of the sound designers 🙂 Much seltzer was chugged. We had a similar process for Nunu (who was voiced by the same person that did Lulu!)

Once everything was recorded, I went in and did a ton of editing and voice processing to make them feel like they’re on the rift. Fun fact, Willump’s breaths are from various large cats and camels! I’m actually still tweaking them, so they might change a little bit while he’s on PBE.

Final note: If you saw that video on youtube with all the Nunu VO one after another; the way it works makes no sense, but in game there’s actually some neat interaction going on – When Nunu activates Bloodboil, he goes into what I call “rage mode” where he starts screaming and leaking goo everywhere. When rage mode is on, Nunu will only scream while moving, since he closes his mouth when idle. He even has sounds for his mouth opening and shutting! I got pretty fired up when I got that to work.

If you do get this skin I hope you enjoy playing with it and may your counter jungles be strong, I had a lot of fun making it!

No plans for just a passive rework on him though as he is probably a champ that we would want to take on all at once. Build some more unique identity into the character, fix some of his one dimensional play, and create more clear opportunities for him outskilling his opponent and vice versa.

What happened to Hephestopheless ideas to rework Talons passive

Meddler Final PortraitGiving Talon a reason to auto attack a bit more’s a solid goal for a passive on him. Very with you that it’s not accomplishing that at present though, it’s not core enough to his play pattern in terms of its contribution, his own ability to set it up or his capability to auto attack for an extended period.

As a side note Hephestopheles does indeed still work at Riot. Original developer intent’s something we like to refer to since it can offer useful insights into how to improve a champion and we’ll certainly tap Hephestopheles for his thoughts when doing work on Talon at some point. Working on a champion puts you in a great position to help maintain and develop them after they go out, it doesn’t mean you continue to control everything about them based off your personal preferences though. Doing what’s right for the character/game is the most important thing and means that if we grab Hephestopheles to chat about changing Talon his response is almost certainly going to be something along the lines of ‘awesome, how can we make him better?’.

Repertoir New PortraitThat’s a pretty unfair and short-sighted assessment.

I’m not an MF main, and neither is Statikk. You’re right about that, but that’s really of much less value than you’re making it out to be. People seem to think that Ashe and Sion were pretty successful updates in the recent past, and I can assure you that I was not an Ashe main and Scruffy was not a Sion main going into those projects.

Also, as designers, we participate in two full internal games every day amongst each other to test changes out and see where we want to take things. Additionally, we have an excellent playtest team full of Diamond, Masters, and Challenger players that play League pretty much nonstop and give us their opinions. Riot Umpunct, in particular, mained MF on his way to Masters this season.

For what it’s worth, Ezreal is literally the lead designer on my team.

I understand you may have concerns over your champion not getting its fair treatment, but please don’t turn things into a series of accusations against us for trying to share and get the champions into a good spot. Spewing insults at me and other Rioters does literally no good, and all it does is discourage us from trying to keep you guys in the loop and take your feedback into account.

Scruffy Final PortraitI agree that he’s in a pretty balanced spot right now. After 5.16, it’s not super clear how that will change (new items and a bunch of reworks could shake things up a lot). My guess is it’ll be about even with frozen heart nerf (hurts nasus) and Steraks Gage (+ base AD good for nasus/sheen users).

That said, the live balance team, the systems team, and the champ update team are all watching the results very closely so we can follow up where it’s needed.

That said, Gypsylord was recently looking into giving Aatrox some love unrelated to ‘juggernaut’ work, so he may be ready to shed some light on that in the coming months.

Will you continue to work on Morde if hes not viable after Patch 5 16

Meddler Final PortraitWe’ve put time aside for follow up work on all four juggernauts, and the new items, during both 5.17 and 5.18’s development in case it’s needed. Morde’s definitely the highest risk project of the four, both in terms of scope of changes and change in playstyle, so it seems a reasonable assumption he might need more follow up attention than average.

We’ll make sure to give you folks some visibility into how we think each of those reworks is going post launch and what we are or aren’t planning to change in response to that. One thing we do want to watch out for though is reacting too quickly to day one performance. With any rework a lot of people that aren’t familiar with a champ, or haven’t played them for a long time, give them a try to see what they’re like now. That temporarily pulls a champ’s performance down a lot briefly, as the need to learn new mechanics even for more experienced players. Day 1 win rates noticeably below a champ’s previous win rate are basically expected as a result, though there’s certainly a limit to how much lower they should be (Fiora for example’s just too weak at present, in addition to going through that learning curve/new player period).

Repertoir New PortraitI am actually actively doing some work on Quinn. One of the things I want to address is that Harrier just seems like it screws me over when playing her sometimes. We’re supposed to be a dynamic duo. Please mark more useful targets, Valor. Please stop taking your time to mark things, Valor. And Quinn, maybe people would take your attacks seriously if they felt like they were aiming to injure someone.

That’s my general attitude on Quinn, anyway.

We’re not at the point yet where I can discuss full details, but they’re high up on my personal radar.

Is Quinns toplane kit preventing her from being played as an ADC

Repertoir New PortraitQuinn is a bit of an oddball, in that identifying what lane she belongs in isn’t an easy task. However, being an adc and being played in a solo lane are not necessarily mutually exclusive, as we have seen from some other guys like Ezreal, Varus, and occasionally Corki being played in solo lanes.

If the meta were ever to shift away from marksman in a duo lane, Quinn’s value would probably be a lot higher, but that hasn’t been the case for quite a long time, so it’s hard to say with certainty if that’s ever going to come back.

It would probably be the safest thing for us to figure out what is unique and/or cool about Quinn and see how we can amplify that and make it something useful that teams care about having. If we could make “ranged carry that becomes melee carry” provide a different output that you wouldn’t just get from another melee carry, then that would probably serve the character well. If we couldn’t, we’d probably have to look to other facets of Quinn to emphasize as her cool and uniquely powerful thing(s).

Hopefully Tarics update will include the Charm mechanic you talked about before

IronStylus Final PortraitTrying to. It’s an interesting balance, and one not without its inherent dangers. A lot of people have attachment to Taric for various reasons. Since he’s such an old asset, there’s more space for individuals to project their fantasy onto him.

Expectation is different in everyone’s eyes, even internally. I and other artists have been working on him for a while also. We’ve gone through LOTS of iterations and are still probably a little ways out from settling on something solid. We have some cool ideas for just what is “gem magic”, how it manifests, and what makes Taric Taric. It’s been a journey, that’s for sure.

Right now we’re hoping to have his concept locked later this month, or sometime next month. Not sure at all about release, since we’ve got some other large projects in the pipeline now we might not hit the end of the year for him, but here’s hoping!

Are you content with leaving Veigar in his current state

Scruffy Final PortraitVeigar wasn’t a champion update (the team I work on) but I know that the live gameplay designers did not intend to nerf him from the onset. It may be time for some tweaks for him if he’s not viable so I’ll run it by them and see if there is any room for a buff.

If he’s already strong there may be other ways to improve his QoL without buffing him. Will investigate, no promises.

We’re also taking the opportunity to shift downtime a bit to better match when most of you are offline. Every third attack against the same target triggers Ekko’s passive, dealing 15 + (12 per level) (+0.7 AP) bonus damage and slowing his enemy by 40/50/60/70/80% (values for levels 1/6/11/16/18) for 2/2.5/3 seconds. If he triggers his passive on an enemy champion, Ekko also gains a movement speed buff equal to the amount he has slowed the champion by. The slow cannot be triggered on the same target for 3 seconds.

Ekko throws a device in a target direction, damaging 60/75/90/105/120 (+0.2 AP) all enemies along its path. Once it reaches max distance or hits an enemy champion, the device expands, creating a field that slows all enemy and neutral units by 32/39/46/53/60%. After a moment, the device contracts and rushes back to Ekko, dealing 60/85/110/135/160 (+ 0.6 AP) damage to all enemies in its path.

Passive: Ekko’s basic attacks deal bonus magic damage to enemies under 30% health, equal to 5% [ +1% per 45 AP ] of their missing health (capped at 400 damage vs. minions and monsters).

Active: Ekko opens a time rift, creating an alternate reality copy of him that tosses a device to a target location. After a delay, the device expands into a broad zone that slows enemies by 40%. If Ekko enters the sphere, it detonates, granting him a 150/195/240/285/330 (+ 0.8 AP) shield for 2 seconds and stunning all enemies inside for 2.25 seconds.

Ekko rewinds time, briefly turning untargetable and invulnerable before reappearing wherever he was a few seconds ago. Once he reappears, Ekko heals for 100/150/200 + 20/25/30% (+1% per 30 AP) of the damage he was dealt over the last 4 seconds. Ekko also deals 200/350/500 (+ 1.3 AP) magic damage to all nearby enemies.

  • At level 9, with 5 points in [ Q ], Jinx’s 5.9 value at 3 stacks is 130%. Her 5.10 value would be 95%.
  • At level 16, Jinx’s 5.9 value would be 130%. This is where both values are equal.
  • At level 18, the 5.9 value would be 140%. End-game the 5.10 value is 10% higher.

To sum up, this is quite the brutal nerf to Jinx’s early game without much tradeoff later. Recommend you max Zap! [ W ] by level 9 over Switcheroo if the change makes it to live.

Hexakill returns as a featured game mode, this time with bans added to Champion Select:

It’s about that time again and we’re bringing back another of our tried and true modes, Hexakill: Twisted Treeline! This time around we’ve included one important addition; BANS!We heard you guys last time, so we’ve gone and squeezed bans into our Hexakill champion select screen. This is also a good test for us to see how efficiently we can resurrect old modes (it varies wildly from mode-to-mode, but you gotta start somewhere).

Some design notes:
— Let us know what you think of the bans readability in the Hexakill champion select screen.
— Obviously if any bugs, etc come up, let us know in this thread!

Hide Eye Candy Menu Option

A new Game tab option will allow players to disable map particles and other clutter.

Recently we added an option to the Game tab in the menu called “Hide Eye Candy”. Some of our more competitive players requested the the option to hide some of the less subtle movement on Summoner’s Rift. We added the option to disable things like butterfiles, dragonfiles and the water wakes to help competitive players focus on what they care about, the gameplay.

The next PBE deploy should have the hook ups enabled. Let us know if we missed anything that should’ve been added and if you have any other feedback regarding this new option.
